Subway White Vs. Wheat
Found this kind of interesting.
From: http://www.thelifeledger.com/2007/03...wheat-or-wrap/
Wheat bread is better than white. Right? Apparently not, especially at Subway.
I did a little bit of research before, but I?ve since gotten a lot more curious. My wife and I have always gotten sandwiches on wheat bread, operating under the assumption that it?s healthier. I decided to take a look and see if that?s actually true.
Here?s Subway?s nutrition information for bread, with white and wheat highlighted:
^^This wouldn't copy, but it is in the link!
And Subway?s ingredients list for white and wheat breads:
ITALIAN (WHITE) BREAD
Enriched flour (wheat flour, barley malt, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, sugar, contains less than 2% of the following: soybean oil, yeast, salt, wheat protein isolate, wheat gluten, dough conditioners (acetylated tartaric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides, ammonium sulfate, calcium sulfate, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, potassium iodate, amylase [enzymes]), sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, mineral oil. Contains soy and wheat.
WHEAT BREAD
Enriched flour (flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, whole wheat flour, high fructose corn syrup, wheat gluten, contains less than 2% of the following: wheat bran, yeast, salt, soybean oil, dough conditioner (acetylated tartaric acid esters of mono-and diglycerides, ammonium sulfate, calcium sulfate, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, potassium iodate, amylase (enzymes)], cracked wheat, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, caramel color (contains sulfites), dried honey preparation (honey powder, invert sugar, wheat starch, soy bran flour, silicon dioxide [anti-caking]), mineral oil. Contains soy and wheat.
Immediately, three things jump out at me:
1. The wheat bread has high-fructose corn syrup. As the medical community studies HFCS more, we are coming to understand it?s connection with obesity, due largely to how it interacts with insulin, ghrelin and leptin.
2. The wheat bread has the same calories, more fat and more carbs.
3. The first ingredient listed is refined flour.
Suddenly, Subway wheat bread is looking less like a healthier alternative to Subway white bread. What about the wrap? Ten less calories, twice the fat, five less carbs, the same refined flour and a bunch of ingredients I can?t pronounce. I?m sticking to the salads. (I wonder what those ingredients are? I?ll have to look into it.)

Thanks for the info! We have a Subway here in our center where I work, and I had been eating there once a week most weeks. I get a 6 inch chicken bacon with provolone, lettuce, black olives, pickles, green peppers and banana peppers and then I use my own fat free Helmann's. I haven't had it in a couple weeks though because I got really bored with Subway. This is good to know next time I'm in a pinch!
I only get 1/2 hr for lunch and there is nothing good near me when I want to cheat!

Thanks for posting that. I've been telling people that for years but no one ever believed me. Three years ago someone at my Weight Watchers meeting told us that.
Plus for me, the white is easier to digest.

I stopped eating Subway when I found a sliver of sheet plastic in my sandwich (could have choked!!). I e-mailed the company and heard NOTHING back. NOTHING. So I don't eat there.
Now I'm doubly glad I don't. As if I didn't have a reason before, this cinches it.
Fast food just isn't worth it.

Once in a while, it's not too bad. I usually get the turkey (double meat) with all the veggies on wheat. Guess I can splurge now and get it on white!

That's really interesting. When I did eat there I would get meatballs in a cup...no bread. They looked at me like I was crazy...guess I was not so dumb after all

I don't eat there because I can make the same sandwich at home and it won't cost me 5 dollars.

I know that is all depends on the bread maker. Some tend to add a sweetener (as you have found out) but others leave it out. It's really important to read the ingredients to the foods you eat. it can be time consuming, but once you get the understanding of what you prefer, you will no longer have to worry about it and you will be on your way to a healthier self.
Thanks for the post! I honestly didnt know about all that. I love the info

thanks so much for posting this, I always get whole wheat and while I knew it wasn't whole grain I assumed it was a healthier alternative to white bread. I am disappointed to see they put high-fructose corn syrup in the ww bread...
thanks again

This is true, I like the subs at Wegmans too, but looked up the nutritional stats and the Wheat bread rolls have more cals, carbs, etc. b/c they add extra sugar to make the wheat bread taste sweet. What a shame, I mean why does anyone have to add sugar to bread....or pasta sauce or anything really. It bugs me, so in conclusion, we are better off with the white bread

Another option:
Ask for extra lettuce in a side salad container, put sandwich contents in container, enjoy with a fork and knife.

At subways here in western canada (may be different elsewhere) I know you can ask for a salad instead of a sub. You get all the same things, toppings, dressing, etc, but instead of on bread you can get it on a bowl of salad. You can also get it as a wrap instead which will probably lower calories

OMG!! thank you sooooo much for the information!! I was so sure it was a little healthier than the white ( yeah a little, cause all their meat are packed with sodium)!! And actually, that's what they want us to think also, they want to attract the ones that doesn't go to Mcdonald!!!

Isnt it also a lot more expensive?
I had a sub yesterday and ordered it with white and it wasn't the same!! I like the whole wheat better... I can imagine why.. . Go figure...

I still eat at Subway fairly often ---> because I like it.
That being said, I don't like to be deceived, that bothers me.
