    Muay Thai vs. Boxing gloves

I know that the biggest difference between the two is that muay thai gloves have a little more flexibility, but for boxing training does it really matter which type I get?

I have been looking at a pair of either twins or windys muay thai gloves.

    thanks

I train in Muay Thai and I can tell you that there is a difference in the gloves. I have a pair of Fairtex 12oz gloves for bag/pad work and a pair of Twins 16oz for sparring. The main difference is the way the gloves are constructed. The Muay Thai gloves allow for more grabbing in the clinch. Also, the padding is distributed differently. Try putting on a pair of boxing gloves and punching a longbag and try a pair of Twins or Fairtex gloves and you'll notice a difference.

if you block with your palms you can grab the leg and judo toss them like an axe over your head.

I have noticed in pics they look differently 'shaped' - Your reasoning could make sense.

Highkicks blocked with forearms. If you try to block a highkick with your hand its gonna end up in your face.

    x2

Here is a Fairtex Muay Thai Bag Glove...

Now here is a Fairtex Training Glove (aka Boxing Glove)...

As said before, the Thai Bag Glove allows you to clinch much easier because it is not as bulky, and much more flexible. Also, it is much lighter than a traditional Boxing Glove which helps increase hand speed, and the form of the glove helps develop correct punching form. The wrist support is also a little different.

So daejuanj, there is your difference.

    I'm pretty sure a 16oz glove is a 16oz glove no?

Try putting on a pair of boxing gloves and punching a longbag and try a pair of Twins or Fairtex gloves and you'll notice a difference.
There are slight differences in the design of Muay Thai Gloves vs. Boxing Gloves, however, comparing a pair of bag gloves to sparring gloves has nothing to do with the difference everyone's referring to in this thread (I hope), that difference is obvious. It also doesn't help your argument that you're comparing two brands of Muay Thai Gloves with no mention of any Boxing Glove brands in your post.

Way too much confusion in this thread. Are we talking about the differences in bag gloves vs. sparring gloves (which is quite self-explanatory) or are we talking about the differences between Muay Thai Gloves vs. Boxing Gloves (I'd assume sparring or training, not the hard as rock, lightweight bag gloves).

    Check it.

    Muay Thai

    Boxing

The main differences are the thumbs and where the padding is distributed. The thumbs on the Thai gloves are straighter and longer which is supposed to allow you to clinch/grab easier. There's also more padding on the back of the hand area of the Thai gloves (for back fists, which is completely unnecessary on boxing gloves) and on the cuff (for blocking kicks). Also the main finger compartment on the Thai gloves is usually longer, again to help you clinch.

And to address the comment that I bolded, when are you ever going to clinch anything, let alone anyone, wearing those light ass, hard as a rock bag gloves that you showed?

So after all of that, to answer the OP's original question, it doesn't really matter which style of glove you get for boxing, but you might as well get gloves designed for strictly punching like the Reyes', Grant's, Rival's, Ringside's, and Everlast's (the real one's not the cheap ass Sporting Goods store models).

good post. I've wanted a pair of Cleto's for a while, but I already have two pair of gloves and don't see spending all the money on gloves I don't really need.

Thai gloves are really only necessary if you're competing in muay Thai, but you can easily work with good boxing gloves.

I can understand, they're definitely not cheap, plus your sparring partners will hate you if you use those horse hair "padded" bricks

When did I ever compare bag gloves to sparring gloves? I was merely mentioning what types of MUAY THAI gloves I have as a reference. Futhermore, when was I ever comparing the two types of gloves I have? Read the post more than once and then formulate a response. thx

When he would block head kicks he would have his rear hand in the correct position ( palm toward face, elbow tucked) and his lead hand would also be up in front of his face w/ palm towards kick. This wasn't intended for blocking it was specifically used to generate more power for the counter kcik.

Nope they are not different if you're buying from the brand from Thailand. Unless you're looking for other type of gloves.
from my experience in exporting these items from Thailand, there are Muay Thai Gloves, Training Bag Gloves, MMA Gloves and those are all so far. The best seller brand is of course Twins. But i always personally recommend Raja Boxing which i find their leather products are better.
