NO. the weights on free weight is a alot harder than bowflex. when I was in 8th grade I did 210 for reps on bowflex and can barely bench 150 free weights. so stick to free weights they're cheaper plus after a while the bar starts to loose some resistant. STAY AWAY from BOWFELX unless you're a women it's great for women

No, it isn't identical. Especially in the older models, how long your limbs are is going to vary the difficulty and stuff. Lifting 250 on bow won't mean you can lift 250 on bar, and lifting 250 on bar won't mean you can lift 250 on bow.
They are mainly guidelines. They are more useful relative to their own exercises for progression, than to compare with other movements. Motor learning is pretty specific.

You have come to the WRONG place to talk about a Bowflex. Everyone on these boards is against anything that doesn't clatter if you drop it...
The bowflex will be great for you if you are just starting off. Doing a solid routine with a good diet and you will get as big as any others. Eventually, and it may be quickly, you will progress beyond the Bowflex.
It does have its drawbacks of course. One, it's a machiene. Two, I have used one before and I really think that the older models, (that use the "bows" for resistance) have a major flaw in that the first 2/3 motion of any exercise is 150% harder then the end contraction.
That is really my biggest beef with it. The new Bowflexes that use that "Spiraltech" weight system or w/e may have solved this problem, but I haven't used one so I dont know.
I'd say get a Power rack, De/Incline/Flat bench/ Oly bar + 300lbs in weight and you will have something that will last you alot longeri n terms of bodybuilding devolopment.http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=3341191

The one that pisses me is "I gave all my fat clothes to my fat friends". I'll break his little spindly arms in half.
If you were just worried about fitness then you could go a long ways with the Bowflex. There is also about no way you could kill yourself on a Bowflex unlike free weights. But for the price you pay for a Bowflex you could have a rather decent free weight home gym.

I picked the bowflex up over my head and threw it 10 ft into the nearest trash compactor, seriously, I trashed it.
Bowflex is a piece of ****, save your money, buy some workout bands, freeweights and some decent used equipment.
600 bucks I got a body solid power rack with pully system, couple hundred pounds of free weights, olympic and dumbell tree and complete set of DB up to 60.
60bucks I got 20 square ft of rubber mats
So get some real gear, bowflex blowsold broken soldier
