How do personal trainers get paid?

the ones that work for a gym, like gold's or 24 hour fitness.

do they get paid a base rate just for being there (standing around, no appointments) and then get paid extra for the time spent training clients? Is this why trainers get annoyed with no-show clients because then they dont get paid as much?

also, how are a trainers hours determined? are the better ones usually the ones that work the busy shifts (5-8?)? I used to work at hollister in high school and managers would either cut or give more hours to workers depending on how much they liked them...is this the same sort of volatility a trainer who works at a commercial gym experiences?

Unless the trainer is ALSO full time staff, they only get paid when clients show up.

At my gym there is a Training Director and a few Assistant Training Directors. These guys are there all day and handle signing new clients. They are paid all day, even when not doing initial workouts or sales.

The rest of the trainers make a flat rate per session and commission on any new clients they bring in. The session rate isn't too good. You either need a lot of sessions or the commissions on sales to really make it worth while.

Depends on the gym. At my gym, trainers still get paid for no-shows. However, you don't get paid for cancellations, but you don't have to come into the gym either.

In my experience, hours are determined based on need, not skill level. Just depends on where your gym needs coverage.

Not really. Gyms want to make money. If you train and keep the clients they give you in addition to bringing in more business, you'll have as many hours as you want. Also, there is nothing stopping you from working at more than one gym if you need more hours.
