Is my flat bench press any good?
Hi guys, today I have done 100 kgs (220 lbs) for two sets of 9 reps and one set of 7. i think my form was good, although I stop the bar a little above my chest. I weigh about 82 kgs (180 lbs) with a fair bit of bf (14-15%?) and have been weight training for a few years, although I have never trained for powerlifting. To tell the truth, I have not even bothered maxing out yet as I don't know if it's worth it. I have no idea if the amount I'm benching is average, decent or good in powerlifting terms. What do you guys think? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

sexist little man
It's a good weight, about the same as mine, so that makes it great. Now the question is, how is your deadlift and squat? Do you have enough combined to break 1000lbs?
*How are the weight rooms in Japan, how much do Japanese men lift
Squat 355 belt only
Bench 305 touch and go
Dead. 375
Total 1035 @ 175lbs, gym lifts

Thanks for the replies guys! I guess I will lower the rep range then, and see what I get. At the moment I'm using quite a narrow grip (shoulder width), so if I broaden it that should probably make up for lowering the bar to the chest (if that makes any sense).
Unfortunately, I have a hip condition that has prevented me from heavy squatting/ deadlifting for about two years (yes chicken legs), but next spring I'm going to have some arthroscopic surgery which should hopefully fix the problem.
Oh, and gyms/ health clubs in Japan are great actually equipment-wise (although they might not be so good for the dungeon gym-type lifter ). There are some badass lifters at my gym too...

that makes no sense. if anything that means your rom is even worse. youll be using a wide grip plus not going to your chest.
no offense dude nott rying to hate on you but keep your current narrow grip since its natural for you throw your ego away and touch your chest with 155 pounds.
and squat and dls.

If you don't touch you're chest then you haven't done a single rep.
If you can bench 100kg for 10 reps properly then it's quite good.. But nothing compared to the powerlifters out there.. In terms of bodyweight:bench ratio you would be doing quite good especilly if you lower you're body fat..

The current training method you are using isn't good. I suggest trying WestSide or 3x3. If you are going to bench press raw, lower the bar until it touches your chest.

no, THAT makes no sense....if he uses a wider grip, it will be easier to touch his chest.....oh and you think just because he barely misses his chest means he needs to go back to 155 pounds???? he hasn't shown one sign of his ego in this thread and you call him out on it.....you need to throw YOUR ego away and just admit this guy's stronger than you

It's more than I can bench so it's great :-)
Seriously, it is a very good lift for a BB or other non-powerlifter your size, but you'll get blown away in competition. These guys use specialized training methods and equipment to get their 1rm numbers way, way up.
If you're serious, find a powerlifting trainer.
As far as not touching your chest, I prefer it to bouncing off your chest. Ideally you would touch your chest and not bounce.
Good luck.

no ideally you would bring it to your chest and pause it, then press.
as you would have to do in a powerlifting competition.

actually, he's telling him to continue with the narrow grip, throw away his ego to use heavy weigh, so he can practice touching his chest with lower weights (cause we all know no one likes to deload to improve form)
cause if he can use narrow stance and barely touch his chest, a wider stance might make it worse

The Japanese are big benchers. Masters of shirts!
