I'm a vet tech (17y). I have seen many cats successfully regulated with diet only. But more often they have to be put on insulin to regulate levels. I wish you well! I am surprised they are keeping your cat for a week though, seems unusual to me. In the past year I sadly lost 2 of my kitties and now have a 10 month exotic shorthair and a 4month old orange tabby.
It's never too late to become the fit, healthy person you were meant to be!
