Coffee
So most of my life I have never really been much of a coffee drinker.....until law school! Now I have at least a cup every morning. Recently, however, I've been drinking on average 3 cups a day. I try to stick to plain ol coffee with skim milk and no sugar or sweetener, but at least a couple of times a week I'll splurge and go to starbucks and get a latte. Since I am conscious of the high amount of sugar in these drinks I make it a "skinny" (which is about 17grams of sugar as opposed to 35 in a regular).
Anyways, I wanted to know whether I should cut out the **** and stick to the plain ol coffee with skim milk and no sweetener. Do you all think the "skinny" lattes are hurting me in the long run? I realize I should try to eliminate most simple sugars from my diet, but I wanted to know if the alternative is that much better.
In other words, what are the nutritional effects of plain ol coffee? I've heard it increases cortisol and keep a lil blubber around the stomach area.
Any insight?.....

I LOVE black coffee......I drink 20ish oz everyday. Does it really increase cortisol a lot?

caffine can actually be used a fat burner so to me it seems like it would have no effect on cortisol, so no extra blubber from black coffee

ya i think i'm missing something too. why would it give you any fat? its a stimulant and increases metabolism for a short period after its consumption. the sugar might make u fat. but all the articles i've read say consuming one or two cups of black coffee per day are beneficial

I'm just saying its what I heard since it may help to increase stress levels and that's usually what causes cortisol buildup...but then again I have no idea what I'm talking about and just wanted to make sure.
So regular coffee with skim milk and no sweetener is fine? Its not something that should be taken out of the diet or something to be worried about?

I'm gonna check into the increase in stress levels. I wouldn't think a cup a day would do any damage there, but i'll look into it. I could see how a pot a day could have some negative effects on stress. If I were wired all day I doubt I'd be very calm. Regular coffee with skim is fine. If you really want the sugar in the coffee just account for it by limiting something from another meal. It shouldn't be taken out of a diet, limited yes. One or two cups a day. I usually just do one in the morning and stick to green tea, oolong tea, and water the rest of the day.

Coffee is fine. I love coffee, only whole beans ground right before brewing for me...call me a coffee snob if you must but i love it. It would take a LOT of coffee to raise cortisol levels enough to cause fat gain. I take mine black or with half and half if i feel like it. I drink 2-4 "mugs" a day. as long as it is not disturbing your sleep or giving you palpitations or anything, drink away

I love coffee!! and star bucks once and a while. Have you thought about using unsweetened organic soy milk by wescoy? it's great. Also you could use stevia to sweeten it up a bit instead of sugar. Just a thought.
Enjoy your coffee.

coffee is extremly good for losing weight. In fact I stopped drinking it because it made weigh gaining too hard. For cutting purposes I will start drinking it again. I wouldn't worry about what type you drink
Another thing to consider is that you will accumulate tolerance to pre workout stimulation faster if you drink coffee. If you're like me and drink pre workout stimulants, you will find that they give you less energy because you're constantly "cracked" out on the caffeine from coffee. This goes for energy drinks as well... IE red bull and monsters. Eliminating those will reduce tolerance to pre workout stimulants

I notice no difference drinking 3 to 4 cups of black coffee per day and not drinking it. I didn't start drinking coffee until I was 35.

Stevia is a all natural sweetener ,you have to buy high quality though most likely in a powdered form. Shop around and try different kinds it's usually found at a food co-op. Stevia is very sweet, you can read all about it on line. Good stuff!
