Need help deciding which firearm to purchase
I recently turned 18 and plan to exercise my right to bear arms and purchase a rifle or shotgun. I'm not sure which one I should get. From the research I've done, it seems that if I was to get a shotgun, I should get a Remington 870 12 gauge. For a rifle I have read strong support for rifles that fire .22 rounds. I don't want to spend more than $300 on the gun. I would like to start hunting as well.
So which gun should I choose to be my first?

Sounds like an 870 would fit your needs. Remington currently has a rebate on some of their 870 models.

i would go with the rem 870 too. I have one and it is a multi purpose gun. I have an 18 inch barrel and pistol grip for home defense set up and the stock barrel and stock for hunting.

Theoretically you want to get the shotgun. However with "assault weapon" bans on the horizon I'd say to get an AR15(s) or AK asap. It's doubtful that anything will happen with pump shotguns. Get as many evil black rifles as you can.

the Remington 870 rocks the house. So does the Mossberg 500. I own the Remington 870 with the 6 round tube and it is absolutely badass.
As for a .22 you'll pretty much just be able to kill squirrels and rabbits with it. Marlin makes a really solid .270 (suitable for deer) for a little under $300.

While I am inclined to agree with KIDRR saying you should get an EBR, I think we've got more time than what we believe we do to purchase one.
I say get the 870 (or take MaqAtaq'a sugg. w/ the Moss 500)..... the minute you rack that sucker for the first time your penor will gain 2 inches on every axis and you will transcend into manhood that much faster!

Oh this is no laughing matter.... my extensive field research led me to puberty at the ripe age of 10..... I had the manliest patch of chest hair of any little leaguer to set foot on the diamond!
In all seriousness though, a pump shotgun really is probably one of the best firearms you can initially buy.... they're easy to maintain, lack sophisticated and expensive parts and are rugged and dependable. If I ever accidentally have kids I'm going to get them a youth pump or two.... I learned on a .22, but it wasn't until I got on an 870 that I really started to understand what I was doing, that recoil meant serious business for an 11 year old
