HoosierHardGain's Time To Get Serious Again Thread

Hi all. I've been around these forums for several years now, and have had several threads over in the over 35 section. I've been up and down with my fitness during that time, having periods of nice gains to be followed by periods of just plain letting myself go.

During the middle part of this year, I kind of bottomed out. I could not find any inspiration/motivation to keep me focused. And the reason became clear: I had no goal. Well, at that moment I set a goal of losing 1 1/4 inches off my waist, and I set a goal date and announced it. I stuck to my nutrition and worked out religiously. I surprised myself and actually reached my goal early. I ended up losing 18 lbs and 1 3/4 inches off my waist.

At one point during that program, I was sitting down and mapping everything out, from my workouts to my diet. And a crazy thought hit me: this must be kind of what it's like when you want to compete...maybe I should do that. Folks, my head shot up in amazement. I had NEVER considered the possibility of getting up on the stage...none! But there I was actually thinking about it.

I did some looking around to shows that take place here in the Indianapolis area, and I found one that looked good. The Mr. Natural Indiana, which is held in September. I emailed the promoter and told him my story, and he was more than gracious, and encouraged me to do it.

I bounced it off of some of my good friends around here. I had several people who had gotten a lot of help from Derek at Scivation, including Dawn, Catherine and Penney. Or to those who prefer screen names, vbsunbum1, IronIc, and ClayCat. They encouraged me email him and starting a program. I did, and filled out the form and sent it back in, complete with pictures.

This past Friday, I got my program in my inbox from Derek. I was very excited. I've spent this weekend reading and re-reading the protocols he laid out for both the workouts and the nutrition. And I have to give him major props, I'm not an easy person to lay out a program for right now. In July, I woke up one morning and could barely lift my left shoulder. After trying to get it to heal on its own for a couple of months, I broke down and went to an Ortho, who concluded that there was no tear, but that I needed physical therapy. Long story short, I can't really do any shoulder or chest exercises right now. Derek still was able to outline an amazing program that I am really excited to start.

This is going to be fun, and a heck of a lot of work. I'm up to the challenge, and I feel blessed to have Derek's knowledge on my side. I have so many friends on here who have given me so much support, and I can't thank them enough.

So, this is the beginning. This journey will take me to next September, and I cannot wait to see what I can accomplish.

Hey, fellow Hoosier! I love the energy over here and plan on dishing out a lot of support to the other posters. The shoulder is getting better slowly. My main concern is to not make it worse!

The diet plan to start with will be the CHA 1800 plan. Yeah, I know the cals sound really low for a man my size. But my metabolism is really bad...1800 is usually what I maintain at, so I am sure that is why Derek picked the 1800 plan to start. The diet I had used on this last program went as low as 1200, which allowed me to make a lot of progress. I truly believe the nutrition is the #1 priority on a program. Basically, especially at my age, I don't believe you can out train your diet.

Training wise, I'll be on a 4 day lifting split. Two upper and two lower body days each. I'm chomping at the bit to do chest and shoulders, but I just can't right now. Military press has always been my favorite movement, so I can't wait to get back to it.

Cardio will be 30 minutes after each lifting session, and a HIIT session on two of the off days. Historically, I am a cardio phobe. But I've come to accept it as necessary to get to where I want to be.

Supps for now will be SciVation whey, Xtend and a daily multi. I need to hold the line financially for now on supps, so I am sticking to these for now.

Monday Morning Workout

This morning was my first day on Derek's plan, so I was excited to get into the gym. I was late getting out of the house because I couldn't find where I put my journal! But I found it, and out the door I went. Because of the shoulder and that several of the movements were ones I hadn't done in a while, I stayed in the lighter end of the rep range, figuring I could mess with the weight more next week.

The routine:

Bent over rows: 3 x 10 - been a while since I did these, so I wanted to stay somewhat lite, so I could get the form back down.

BB Shrug: 3 x 10 - again, since it hits the shoulders, I wanted to go lite.

BB Curl: 3 x 8 - my physical therapist warned me about going too heavy on these, since the bicep attaches to the muscle that's been bothering me.

Chin Grip Pulldown: 3 x 8

DB Shrug: 3 x 11 - way to lite...will up the weight next time

Alt DB Curl: 3 x 10

Cable Row: 3 x 10 - these felt nice...will go heavier next time

And cardio was enjoyed to the tune of 30 mintues low intensity inclines on Mr. Treadmill.

All in all, it felt great. Now on the hardest part, getting the diet down and getting all 6 meals in.

Tuesday Workout...Derek workout #2

Chilly, chilly as I left the house to go workout. What was worse was that when the alarm went off at 4:45, I wanted to throw it against the wall! But, I pulled myself out of bed at the sound of the alarm and headed off to the gym. The workout went well, though my shoulder was bugging me just a bit this morning. I think my lil girl pulled on it a lot yesterday, which probably aggravated it a bit. I did lower body movements today, but what was funny was the one movement that bothered my shoulder wasn't squats, but standing calf raises. Yep, the body is a funny thing.

Squats: 3 x 8 - basically just added one rep to what I had been doing, with just a little extra weight.

Standing Calf Raise: 3 x 10 - I kept trying to find a weight where I could do lower reps, but kept being able to pop out 10 reps...live and learn. Add more weight next week.

DB Lunges: 3 x 7 - if you ever want to see something funny, watch me doing lunges. I've mentioned it several times over the years on here, and I will say it again: I HATE LUNGES!!! But, a necessary evil.

RDL: 3 x 8 - added a bit of weight to what I had been doing

Hanging Crunch: 3 x 11 - my ab muscles need a lot of work. I've neglected them for too long.

Seated Calf: 2 x 6, 1 x 7

Rope Crunches: 3 x 11

All this followed up with 30 minutes of low intensity incline work on the treadmill. I had to really watch my time, because I had to get back home and shower before my PT session.

So that concludes my second Derek workout. Let it be written, let it be said.

Well,well Monsieur Hoo! Another productive morning for ya. Thats a pretty cool training session that Derek has you doing. So different from mine. One day down to Mr. Indiana!! I'll have to check out where your show is located. If it's not too far of a drive from South MI I just may show up and shout out your number. Hee Heee!!!
