It was on my second set of deadlifts. I had already done one set of 170 for 5 reps. I tried to pull the bar off of the ground when I felt a tear in the left side of my lower back. It's been about an hour now and the pain has slightly gone away. When I bend over(no homo) I feel a tightness where it tore. I'm on Rippetoe's, so today was my Squat, bench, and deadlift day. What should I do?
Thank you.

A tear is when muscle fiber, tendons, or ligaments are stretched beyond their threshold and physically rip- leading to the need of either surgery or prolonged periods of rest. A pull is when those three are stretched severely so damage is done, but generally need less rest and just periods of heat and cold compression.

Thanks man. I think I just pulled something then. Since the pain has completely left and been replaced by a slight tightness. A very slight tightness. In fact if I didn't know it was there, I wouldn't know it was there. Do you think it would be safe for me to do squats tomorrow? Squats and pendlay rows actually. If not how long should I wait?

speaking from experience, you should wait until all the tightness goes away. I had done something similar, without the feeling of tearing my muscle, i tried to go back to deadlifts on a slight tightness back... and the next day I felt it got worse.. and in fact I can still feel it after 4 days.
right now, I'm getting off squats and deads for a while now.

Strike up another victim to Rippetoes.
Many possibilities...muscle, ligament or disc injury. A tearing sensation is not a good thing. If the pain is storng, do get it checked out. In the meantime, try ice and http://www.communigate.co.uk/ne/eppsg/page8.phtml
No, that is not correct at all.The science is out there!

Well it's been a week now. I tried deadlifting yesterday, WITH THE BAR, and I felt a tightness in the same spot. So I just called off deads that day. It really did suck to do that. Today I stated squating again and it was fine! I even got a little bit of a pump in my lower back! That never happens! So I guess I'm just going to let it rest for another week and then try deads again. I really hope I can do them eventually.
