    Gymnastics?

Anyone that's older do this stuff? I'm looking at getting into it, I know those guys are in tip top shape and they have the strength and ability to back it up. They apparently teach an adult gymnastics class on base once a week, so I might start doing. Just wondering if anyone else does and what benefits they've had.

If you haven't done it since you were a little kid like most gymnasts, you won't be very good. Building muscle memory and having no fear as a child is the best way to learn gymnastics. sorry bro.

I've taught adult gymnastics classes. True it easier to learn as a kid, but you can always learn with the proper method of teaching and the proper frame of mind.

Don't go into thinking you are going to be flipping all over the place in a couple of weeks and then turn it in a cool party trick. As fun as that is, it does take lots of time and expierence.

Benifits usually include the obvious, fitness. But along with that. Body awareness, spacial Awareness. 2 major things we lose with time. Flexibility, but not just with doing splits. Flexibility is about range of motion. You increase shoulder, back, leg and wrist flexibility. With good range of motion comes stronger body parts.

Depending on what they offer.... sometimes its just fun to get on a trampoline and jump until you get too tired to jump any more. Just be ready for a stiff lower back after the first day of too much jumping.

Go for it, enjoy it. I still do it when I get the chance. I get asked all the time to offer Adult classes. I just don't have the time to fit them in any more.

If you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them. Since I run my own gymnastics club, I'm sure I'd be able to help you out a little bit.

    Best of luck.

Well I basically want to build up my core more than anything. I don't want to do flips or anything like that. I want to concentrate on balance type movements, rings and such. Is that called anything specific? The woman on base I talked to only teaches womens gymnastics using the poles and such.

There are definately lots of stuff there would have that would help with what you want then. It may take some work on the coaches end if they are not used to coaching men, but there are so many similarities.

Even though the beam is a girls apparatus. Trust me jump up on that thing and it will work your balance. There is lots of conditioning done in gymnastics that is univeral. Most will revolve around core, (abs and lower back) because those muscles take a beating.

Try talking to the coach and see what they say. I would definately say thay could help you out.

Well I did talk to her, she said there was only one guy in the classroom and the rest were women. If I was going to do this I wanted to have a full on class with a lot more than just the beam. I don't doubt that thing will work, but her class is also full and she'd have to make an exception for me as well. I have rings at home, and a ring training DVD. I'm just going to make a workout routine with them once a week.

22 is actually old to just be starting gymnastics. What exactly are you trying to get from it? The best gymnasts in the world are 18 and under.

Yes I have to agree, 22 is tough to start. But as for the best gymnasts in the world. Most of the males are 20 or more. Females are much younger.

Thats exactly what my club more or less works on. I don't coach any competitive gymnasts. I have a performace group that get hired for shows and entertainment. Because they are kids most are on a smaller scale, but I have done some bigger stuff where you just get to go crazy. Love every second of it.

And yeah, if can show off some cool stuff the women love it and it feels a bit more masculine. They always ask if I am flexible.
Do or Do Not! There is no try!

Go for it! I think you'll have a lot of fun regardless of your age.

Gymnastics is for anyone at any age. It's just that younger people have an advantage in learning the stuff quicker unless you are pretty well conditioned.

Gymnastics can be learned at any age. They can always modify or adapt the programming to suit his needs.

You have to remember that tricking, parkour, and gymnastics are all different things.

    Gymnastics is well...gymnastics lol.

Tricking is a mix of martial arts tricks and kicks, some breakdancing power moves, and gymnasics. A lot of tricking is mostly kicks and twists though otherwise it would just be called flips.

Parkour is getting from point A(example: railing) to point B(example: another railing) as quick and smoothly as possible.
