Is it okay to run for a half hour at 7 miles per hour or will it burn muscle?

depends.. if you are doing high intensity, which is a heart beat per minute higher than 140 + then you are useing carbs for energy.. and if you do not have enough carbs in ur system to burn them off, your body will turn your muscle into carbs for energy, thus burning them off.. either that, or taking the nutrients from ur muscle, this not letting them grow bigger.
lower intensity cardio at 120-130 heart beats per minute will not burn ur muscles away because it is useing less carbs, and more fat for energy.
with a solid hour workout at high intensity, and a 30-60 minute low intensity cardio exercise, you will be burning some amazing fat.
lower intensity = nothing lower then 20 minutes or its a waste of your time.

umm....seemed absolutely correct to me. He is right. Higher intensity cardio = more anaerobic metabolism = more carbohydrates used for fuel. If you run low on glycogen (like PWO) then muscles will break down their amino acids (branch chained amino acids) and the liver will convert them to glucose for fuel. Lower intensity cardio = more aerobic metabolism = more oxidative degradation of fatty acids. The only thing that I would add is that if you do slower intensity cardio, then your obviously gonna burn less calories than high intensities if you go for the same time either way. So, you might end up burning more fat in HIIT but maybe more muscle as well.
