what does it mean to be insulin sensitive

I wanted to post this here b/c I feel that this is the most knowledgeable section on the forum.

As the title states....what does it mean to be insulin sensitive?

How does this differ from insulin resistance?

I've been reading a lot lately abut the 'Palumbo' diet....essentially a keto diet.....and read that it can make you insulin sensitive...Is this a bad thing?

Insulin sensitive is a good thing. It means that your body secretes insulin normally or perhaps better depending on the bodytype. Ectomorphs tend to be more insulin sensative. Hence the ability to eat more carbs. Insulin is a way for your body to remove sugar from your blood.

the clinical meaning to be insulin sensitive means it takes less insulin to clear a certain amount of glucose whereas someone who is insensitive will take more insulin to clear a certain amount of glucose

What is the general implication for training/nutrition. And does it matter at all to low level athletes?

Layne hit the nail on the head.

But be careful with the keto diet. Make sure you keep those cheats in to keep the metabolism going and remind your body what carbs are. Some people have reported having problems adding carbs back in after an extended period of time on a keto diet. There are definitely digestion issues and it may be that while a keto diet in the short run IMPROVES insulin sensitivity, in the long term it may be detrimental. Carbs also stimulate the metabolism.

thanks guys....this is all GREAT information. I'm not sold on the Palumbo diet......as I've had some pretty good results using Layne's methods...and plan to use him again the next go around.

With so much hype about the Palumbo diet on "other" boards....I can't help but want to know more.

Brendan - you hit on exactly what I'm worried about....What happens when it's time to add those carbs back in...will my metabolism take a hit on this diet, digestion, etc.

i'm not going to say anything negative about dave. All I will say is there is no one diet for everyone, and a lot of the hype is just that... hype. Dave is a good guy but also has a lot of guys who follow him who would jump off a bridge if he requested it and so there is this fanatical following. I'm not saying his stuff doesn't work, it does, but I believe there is a different diet that is optimal for everyone

To that end, Dave has always been good to me and very respectful and I think he's better than 99% of the idiots out there that prep people

Hi guys, I am also researching the whole keto and carb free eating. I am preparing for my second figure show in April 09 and I feel like due to my body's reaction to carbs and the type 2 diabetes in my family as well as heart disease this is a lifestyle I should follow. I was interested in knowing more about this. I read the CHA diet on scivation and the bulking for endomorphs (not looking to bulk, just reading for the info). I learned a lot about both these diets and I am convinced that carbs are not my friend. My questions is this, if you are insulin resistent, should you make this diet a way of life, or should you cycle on and off it based on your show training and prep? I would like to incorporate this as a lifestyle, when I keep refined carbs out of my everyday diet with just a cheat meal a week, I feel so incredible. It is getting to the point that eating things like white bread or dinner rolls arent appealing to me anymore, because I know how it will make me feel. Any thoughts, suggestions or additional links I could look up would be great!
