If other animals don't have feelings...

...why are they such effective models in the testing of psychotropic drugs?

If they don't have feelings, such as, say, depression and anxiety... why is it that we use them to test pills to treat such things - and see the same results in rats as we do in humans? We observe similar behaviors and brain activity before treatment is administered - ditto after.

    So?

I believe animals have compassion. Especially, in this case:

    Animals don't have feelings silly

Clearly their reaction was motivated by their reliance on him for sustenance and survival.

Surely from a scientific viewpoint it has been established that animals can suffer from anxiety. I certainly believe that animals have feelings.

I felt like a pussy for almost crying at that video..... damn you!

Animals not only have feelings, I believe they acquire personalities as well, it's just more visible in some rather than others.

I believe they have feelings. I just don't think they realize they are having them.

Kind of like when I was 3. I'm sure I was happy, sad, angry, all that good stuff. I just don't remember it.

    No feelings? No intelligence?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnie_(dog)

"For example, the day after he first allowed his owner to put her arm around him, he placed a large bear with its arm around a smaller frog.[2][6] Dr. Barbara Smuts, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan who studied Donnie, attributes these behaviors to his being caged in the shelter for a year with only a single toy.[4]" (there's a Krane in every crowd).

Amazing how he associated a larger creature (human) putting its arm around him (a smaller creature) and a large stuffed bear's arm around a smaller frog. I guess it's because he was caged for a whole year. Nah, he didn't make a conscious association.
"Go home, have a beer and smash something. That's what I would do" - Unknown (but probably Thor).

We had a rat terrier and a lab once, and the lab would bite down on the whole body of the terrier, but just enough to let the little guy know not to mess with him.

If they don't have feelings, such as, say, depression and anxiety... why is it that we use them to test pills to treat such things - and see the same results in rats as we do in humans? We observe similar behaviors and brain activity before treatment is administered - ditto after.

    So?
Quit being all rational and stuff, animals can't tell me they feel anything.. therefore they have no feelings!! Beat that logic.

My dog definatly has emotions. He even understands our emotions. For example of my wife is in a bad mood he knows it and will act differently.

I'm not sure if he's just reading body language or what, but he will respond by sitting next to her and trying to comfort her.

I have a cat with emotions. She was seperated from another cat that she lived with for a few years and suddenly started peeing on everything. Also when I was deployed to Afghanistan my wife said she would roam the house looking for me then get all weepy. Just thought I would share. (no homo)
