the shiny penny

I turned 45 last week, yep?older but apparently not any wiser. I?ve been thinking over my tendency for over thinking. I?ve learned that giving my body a rest from weight training for the summer works best for me. So when I get back to it right after my birthday, I start out with the best of intentions, my goal clearly in sight and then I see it? the shiny penny. Oooh, ahhh (little bit of drool) and bam I?ve gone from clear focus to analysis paralysis. For some reason my biggest struggle is with supplementation. There is a massive amount of well meaning and helpful information, but it breeds snake oil salesmen and I can?t seem to quiet my mind long enough to let reason in. What if I?m not getting enough protein? What if it?s the wrong kind of protein. Oh man wait, this ad says it?s new product is the ?greatest breakthrough in the world of bodybuilding nutrition??what happened to last months revolutionizing breakthrough? You know, the one that increased testosterone in those rats. The one that not only gives you ripped abs, but will get you laid too. I mean it has activators and precursors for God sake. It?s got Italics, bold type and exclamation points. Hey this one?s gotta be good, it says Mega in front of it. The articles are presented as if they were news stories complete with testimonials, Before and After photos, double-blind studies and proprietary blends.

Ok, that?s the end of my rant. I know it?s not something we don?t already know. It?s just that after a break from all the ?noise?, it takes me a little time to settle down and just get back to food, rest and exercise (plus a little protein?whey)!

hey bud,
Haven't heard from you in awhile.
I've got to laugh at that analysis rant.
My personal experience has lead me to conclude that supplements are generally useless. The only exception seems to be creatine. Otherwise, . useless.

There are a few good supplements out there but as stated without a good macronutrient balance of protein, fats and carbs and a solid exercise program the supps wont help - ie most agree whey and creatine are good but they dont do anything for you if you dont get in the gym. Most of the supps I use are pretty inexpensive and I get them at Walmart like vitamins, fish oils, glucosamine/MSM etc - if nothing else they are a cheap insurance policy...

Hey thanks! Yeah they are really proud of their "old man" - my wife took my trophy and contest pics to the gym and got the manager to display them (I think she really just didnt want it in the living room) and my kids all brag to their friends at school. You know the old "my dad is stronger than your dad" stuff that the kids do - well when they pull up my website their friends stop arguing lol. Seriously though, I am just glad to set a good example and its cool how all the kids are now eating eggs and oatmeal for breakfast instead of cereal :-)
