Brutal chest cold - Workout or not?
I have a fairly severe chest cold this week. I'm coughing up quite a bit of phlegm. Anyway, should I workout this week or rest?

you could stay home, rest, and if you get burst of energy, crank out some pushups, situps, followed by some hacking snot when the blood gets flowing.

Just stay home and recover. You'll feel like you aren't doing anything, but destroying your body at the gym is almost the worst thing you can do when you're body is using everything it has to try and fight off a severe cold. You'll be good soon and be better off for it bro.

The theory is that if the cold is limited to the head area, snifles, sneezing, etc, if MAY be alright to workout. However, if it manifests itsself in the chest/lungs with coughing and the production of phlegm as well as with sore throat, then it is wise to not workout because to do so can result in a worsening of symptoms and the possiblity of getting very sick. So based on your symptoms it is not advisable to workout. If you have any doubts you should always contact your medical doctor.

Thanks for the advice. I've taken the last couple of days off. Still not feeling great, but getting better. I was just worried about falling off track on my workout schedule and losing gains I was making, but you guys just reassured me that it would just be worse to try to work through it.

This is not rocket science but common sense! The bottomline is that when one is physically run down due to an active respiratory infection it is in their best interest to take it easy, rest and GET WELL! The weights, our muscles and our beliefs that we will get smaller if we don't workout for a few days or weeks is only in our minds not reality.

Plus why risk getting other people sick in the gym? Get some rest and get better!
