Bulking Up Abs
I'm looking to gain size in my abs and really bulk them up. Cobblestone abdominal look is what my ultimate goal is. I know about genetics but beyond that I would love some suggestions as to what exercises I can do to really gain size.

abs are just like any other muscle group; to increase the muscle size, you need to increase the weight. I would maybe focus on 12-15 reps till failure, but some might disagree...
What are you currently doing for abs?

^i know there are people who do...but i don't know how that allows adequate time for muscle growth. maybe it works for some, but 2-3 times a week is enough imo

If you want deeper grooves in your abs, you need to blast those babies with heavy sets and low reps, which is the most effective way to train your abs to begin with.
But, it all starts with getting rid of your belly fat with a clean diet and fat burning workout routine. There's more info here http://www.best-abs-exercises.com/burn-stomach-fat.html

I've found that good ol' cable rope crunches did the job nicely, pyramiding up in weight for 4 sets (or whoever many it takes to do the job) going from 12-15 down to 8-10.
Have someone hold or sit on your calfs so you can really get some heavy weight on the go (obv without compromising your form/technique). Another extreme way that I have used was to get my training partner to assist with a few forced reps(!)-yes forced reps for abs, by pushing down on my back and then allowing me to get the negative. Use it sparingly mind.

Sorry, but I strongly disagree. Squats and deadlifts build core strength but not abdominal mass.
Do weighted ab exercises with progressive resistance.

So I've heard both, doing 12-15 reps in 3 sets, or doing higher weighs higher sets and lower reps. Currently I'm doing 4 sets of 8 reps with a 35lb plate on my chest (cheap gym, nothing else to do).
Should I bump it up to, say, 8 sets of 5 reps with a 45lb plate on my chest?

It's because if I look at a picture of myself from back then, it motivates me to become better than I was. It's all about self-improvement, change for the better, and the weightlifting pain, a type I hadn't experienced before. This is a good pain, the kind that tells you that you're alive.
