Back Squat causes hip flexor pain

Relative beginner to lifting. Have been lifting on and off for about a year. Whenever I do back squats, I strain my left hip flexor. It takes a couple weeks to heal. The only solution that I've been able to come up with is to do wide stance squats.

    1) Any guesses as to what causes this?
    2) Am I missing out on anything by doing wide stance squats instead of regular?
