Are you working out of a base in AK? And what is your specific job title in the Coast Guard?
I ask because I have a very good friend that does maritime law enforcement for the CG and he is training for whatever the special forces of the CG is where you repel out of heli's onto ships for drug busts and **** like that.Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.

Only if they call.
Yep, I'm from Texas, but stationed in AK right now. I'm an Operations Specialist.
8 weeks long, lots of stress, same as all the others. Less physical fitness stuff than say the Marines or Army, but a lot of mental stress. Don't get me wrong, you need to be in good shape to make it though.
Love it. Can't think of a whole lot of dislikes. I guess moving every 3 years can be a little annoying. But it's cool cause you get to live and travel all over the US.***Misc Survivalist Crew***

I'm enlisted. I considered going through OCS a couple times, but I think I would score too high on the common sense test to be an officer. lol
Officer life, from what I've seen, isn't too bad. It really depends on the person. Some people spend their entire career burning the people below them to further their career, and some actually care about their people and get respected much more (and do well themselves).***Misc Survivalist Crew***

I got sea sick once. Never been on the Bering. I was on a boat that did Caribbean patrols only (tough life)
We just left Panama, heading towards the canal and I had a glass of milk. The cooks failed to mention we ran out of milk along the way and they pick up some Panamanian Goat milk! So along with that **** in my stomache and some fairly heavy seas, I puked. That was the only time though.
I've done some rescues in heavy seas before, again in the Caribbean. We came upon a sailboat LOADED with Hatian migrants and had to pull them off and put them on our ship. We had a few hairy situations during that event.***Misc Survivalist Crew***

I know one thing, cold plays a lot as far as seasickness goes. Exposure is another matter in the Bering. You must've have been near a big tropical storm. I've worked in cold weather hauling crab pots in the Pacific Ocean, and it is scary sometimes when you see a wall of water in front of you. Working in the Seas, takes a special person to work in those conditions.

So do you guys need to know the same sort of things paramedics know aswell? What specifically do you do? If some one does join the 'rescue' division(is there one?) do they need to know paramedic type stuff or is there seperate people in the chopper for that?
Never thought about a career in that but it seems like it would be interesting for sure,.. I'm currently set to go into policing but CG seems like it could be a blast.Sept 06: 195lbs 31% bf || Sept 07: 145lbs 8% bf
