So can cardio reduce your muscle mass?

It seems many people have told me that cardio can take away muscle mass. One reason is that if I do cardio after I workout, then I won't have any readily available energy left, so my body will start to metabolize the protein for energy.

However, the problem I find with this is that I've always learned that once you have used up all of your energy from carbohydrates, you would then start to metabolize lipids/fats. And it is not until you are done metabolizing your lipids until you move onto protein for energy.

So what is your take on this? Is there anyway for cardio to take away muscle mass or negate any gains I've made?

What you have been told is mostly ****. Unless you are a IFBB pro then cardio shouldnt really have an effect on keeping your muscle.

Cardio is great for building LEAN muscle, but as I've experience, I won't actually gain the size I want unless I 'bulk' properly. However, when you're cutting and wanting to maintain muscle mass than cardio is O.K.

Look over in the "Losing Fat" section of the forum. You'll see some people lose a ton of fat & muscle from crash dieting. If you have a poor diet, then compound it with a lot of cardio. Yes, you will lose muscle & some fat.

    It's all about diet.

It can slow down your progress if you do excessive cardio, doing a 20 minute job after a workout or a 10 min skip just to keep fit is fine. Just don't go on marathons it should be sweet as.

its all about the timing of your nutrition.

    something like:

    - after your 30-45 min gym session, go do some low to moderate cardio for like 10-30 mins for fat burning (key word Moderate. Heart beat cant be too high otherwise you start burning muscle).

    - in the morning before you eat breakfast, again do low to moderate intensity cardio for good fat burn (and relatively little muscle wastage if you aren't putting your heartbeat through the roof)

    - normal situations, eg 2 hours after lunch. go swim/run/bike/sex for 1 hour or however long you like, then hit the weights BUT MAKE SURE you eat your carbs and protein before you start doing weights, this way your weight session won't destroy your muscles.

The key is experiment, try figuring out what works for you and stick to it, don't be afraid to try new things. Losing muscle is not a problem unless you do crazy 1000 calorie diets

one of the worst pieces of advice I took was dropping cardio on a bulk

    how do you loose muscle?

and how do athletes ever put on muscle since they do a fair amount of high intensity cardio? Those athletes also seem to be able to retain it as well.. goodness you ever seen a rugby player?

You're actually the very first person ever to tell me to not do cardio. And starving to death???, I eat at least 4 meals a day! You can at least say why you think Cardio=Not good for muscles.

But anyways, thanks for the answers people. It seems that generally everyone agrees that cardio can only take away from muscle mass if it is intense and your diet is not very good.

don't make your heart rate go up very high; take a light jog/brisk walk for 20-30 min a day to start (like in the AM before breakfast or after your workout as long as your workout isn't too long either)

try it for a while to see if you can lean out a bit while keeping or even gaining muscle

it's not bullcrap that you'll lose more muscle with high intensity cardio
cool, thank's bro. Now I know that if I wanna get jacked and look like Reggie Bush all I have to do is walk 20 minutes a day.

lots of wrong stuff written here. You won't be glycogen depleted. Fat will only fuel a small percentage of it. Protein use is negligible anyway unless you're fasted or running a marathon.

IMO you need to not worry about cardio and you need to eat more and focus on building muscle and stop, worrying about fat gain.

Bad advice. I did just that and I almost killed myself. blood pressure, sweatines, breathing problems are some of the things that can develop from putting on large amount of muscle+fat without doing cardio.

dont do cardio, you will be anorexic. lol jk. cardio is important imo, especially if you have a bodybuilder's diet. whether or not it reduces muscle mass is debatable, but you can bet that with the correct balance of nutrition, weight training and cardio, you'll only get stronger and more ripped.

no carido will not recude muscle mass. groth/muscle amss is directly related to net calories. if your net calories as the end of the day are still over your maintance you will grow (pakc on muscle and if way voer net fat as well) so say your maintance level is 4000 calories. you need approx 4500 to grow, all otehr caloric expenses aside, if you burn hypothetically 1000 calories doing cardio, you need to eat 1000 calories in order to still be at 4500 and growing.

I am on a bulk and have been for some time. I do 15 to 20 min run after lifting. I eat plenty though. No running after leg day. If you can run after leg day you are doing it wrong.
BULKING AND NOT WANTING TO GAIN FAT IS LIKE HAVING SEX AND NOT WANTING TO GET OFF. IT IS NOT VERY PRODUCTIVE.

FFS DO CARDIO!! At the most just eat more to replace the calories you lose doing cardio. Unless you are running a marathon its very easy to replace the 200 - 400 calories lost from a 1/2 jog or walk. FFS

First off I think we need to clarify what "Cardio" is. Are you talking about long, slow, steady pace stuff, Intervals, sprints, HIT, etc....?

There is a huge differences in energy systems utilized, fuel used, metabolic effect during, metabolic effect after, .....

    Secondly, what are your goals?
