Question Can you drink Raw Egg Whites?

You know you can buy just plain egg whites in cartons at the grocery stores, so you dont have to seperate them.

Could you just drink the egg whites straight from the carton, without cooking them at all. Or would that give you salmonila (or whatever that is called)

As long as they are pastuerized they should be fine. Not optimal though.

    1 in 20,000 - 30,000 *may* contain Salmonella.

I'd be more worried about the BV not being a good as cooked, if anything.

I do it everyday, but I have whole eggs raw. 10 of them.

No time or inclination to cook or eat that many eggs amongst the other things I eat.

    late

"As long as they are pastuerized they should be fine. Not optimal though"

This is way late but i read some of the article and I found this helpful:
"In this study, it was shown that after ingestion of 25 g of raw egg protein, almost 50% is malabsorbed over 24 h. The higher digestibility of cooked egg protein (90%) presumably results from structural changes in the protein molecule induced by heating, thereby enabling the digestive enzymes to gain broader access to the peptide bonds."

In short, cooking your eggs is more benificial. This study showed that almosy half of the raw egg whites were malabsorbed over 24 hours.

The egg whites that come preseparated in a carton are pasteurized, so I don't see it being an issue. I prefer to cook them in my oatmeal, but that's just personal preference. I find them slimy when raw and plain, but from a nutritional/disease perspective, no they won't give you salmonella.

If you're just looking for quick protein to drink, why not just use a protein isolate shake?
