Ricotta as a sub. for cottage cheese

    Hi,

I make my own ricotta cheese, using 1% milk.

Can I use this instead of cottage cheese? Maybe add a sprinkle of protein powder to up the protein?

    I love ricotta.

Depending on the brand, I think it has less protein. But I use it anyhow

Ricotta is great savory or sweet. And it isn't salty like cottage cheese. I hate salt. I've tried the no salt cheese and they taste gross to me

If you are making your own, I think it would be fine, as long as you aren't draining protein off

Yes you can. Lowfat ricotta cheese is an excellent substitute for cottage cheese and the fact that it has less salt is a good thing.

I'm not sure if ricotta has as much protein as cottage cheese...Also, is ricotta a source of casein protein? If that's what you're eating it for, I would look into that.

I personally buy dry cottage cheese curd (20-something grams of protein for just one serving), and mixed in with some blueberries, it's like a dessert!

I have already looked into this, actually. Ricotta is made out of whey protein, so there's not much casein in it at all.

I'd like to add, if you ever want to try, make some paneer. I would think it'd be lower fat with skim milk, than usual... And it has a good plenty protein as well. (Normally, 20 g for 3 ounces... Not sure what it'd be for a skim version...) With spinach being such a good carb, too, you could just make up some nice homemade palak paneer, if you're into Indian cuisine.

Found the nutrition info for lowfat ricotta cheese. Not too shabby!
    http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutriti...ricotta-cheese

3.5g Fat, 24.5g Protein for 1/4 cup of the stuff.
