Hitting 39 tomorrow
Age has never been an issue with me until this year. I have always had the attitude that you're only as old as you feel. This year is different for some reason. I don't know if it's because 40 is only one year away, or, if it is because I'm starting to realize that statistically I'm half-way through my living years. Anyone else struggle with this?

Not to worry - you're always as young as the woman you feel....

At 42, I'm in the best shape of my life.
While I wish I was 39 again...29 or 19 even...not if I couldn't be where I am now, mentally.
The point I'm trying to make to you...it's natural for people to become anxious about growing older. Hell, I have that problem at times as everyone does.
But your mental state seems to adjust as you age and you accept it and are comfortable with it. Unless you're someone like Madonna who has become Skeletor in her attempt to stay 30 years old...at 50.
I find women my age attractive...when I'm 50, I'll still find women my age attractive...and at 60 and at 70 etc. Although I have to admit the 20 year olds look better and better every year...estrogen is a wonderful thing in women

I remember 39. Was a good year. I started lifting weights and learning about proper nutrition. And regarding the comment about statistics, if we in the OA35 forum believed in stats, we probably wouldn't be here
Have a great birthday! Do something fun...

i'm having fun getting older because i always meet new people who are soon going to be shocked at my actual age after they find out i'm 10-15 years older than they thought i was.so,basically,i've been having alot of fun, especially since age 30,when i proceed to surprise people when revealing my actual age.
most thought i was 19-21 at 30,and 22-25 at 35.
most think i'm 24-28 now that i'm 38.
i predict when i'm 45,most will think i'm 30-32.
and when i'm 50,most will think i'm 35.
at 60,most will think i'm 40-45.That'll sure be Alotta Fun! : )
on another note of it all though.i DO get troubled deep down inside about time not standing still like i think it awtah.i Think about becomming Really old quite a bit if my mind isnt properly occupied.I've actually had this sorta dilemma since the age of 28.It's like i've been haunted off and on by the old man tormentor demon or something.go ahead and laugh or whatever, but seriously,i am not joking about this.
i am looking forward to getting a motorcycle as soon as i can so that i have that new toy feeling which will be really beneficial and theraupeutic to my soul.the spirit needs to feel young just as much as the body does.so yes,you can be aging away in you're 60's or 70's and struggling to stay decently fit with you're workouts but then, you can just jump right on that bike, turn that key, twist that throttle and woosh away like you're still a young eagle spreading them ole wings and blasting off into the sunset like you're eternally young and still full of life.
this is how i plan to gravitate and reinvent myself into a new outlook on everything and lighten up my personal reality.

hell man...I turned 39 this year myself. I also lost almost 60 lbs at age 39. At age 39 I ran in my first 5k race ever ....and placed in 273rd out of 3700 participants beating many people half my age. Time to stop feeling sorry about your age and showing what a man your age is capable of

40 has been a good point in my life. I give even less of a **** what society and the media thinks American life should be.

I had some reservations about turning 39 for some reason as well. Maybe it is just getting too close to 40. I turn 40 in March, and so far no ill feelings about that. Who knows? LOL

I felt it at 30, 40, and 45. When I turned 30 I had a strange mortality dream - then 2 days later learned my father was terminally ill. When I turned 40 I felt something similar - and lost several treasured aunts and uncles. Then a few weeks ago when I turned 45 I didn't have such a dream but realized I could no longer cling to the idea of being in my "early forties". What the hell. I feel younger than most people my age. My mother is 70 and looks like she's 55. As Travis Bickle said in Taxi Driver: "You're only as old...as...you...feel...".

Like others have said, it's merely a number. As for struggling with it or any age, put it this way: This year I battled cancer for the second time and yet am in the best shape ( other than the cancer ) I've ever been at the ripe "old" age of 42. It's only an issue if you let it be.

I teach 7th grade at a 7-12 high school. Very few of my students can keep up with me over the long run. I go and run stadiums or around the track during my planning period. There are always students out there for PE. When I'm running many of them will start running with me and some will take off and outrun me... for a few minutes... then I start catching and passing them as they drag and lag behind. I'm in the best shape I've been in in the last 20 or so years, and I'm damn proud of it. Don't worry about turning 39... or 40... or whatever. Worry about NOT turning them. I'm not as worried now as I was a few months ago when I got back to being serious about my fitness. I can't wait 'til my next full Dr. checkup.

I remember when I was 39. My sinus cavity was full of coke, my kydneys were bleeding trying to process Jack Daniels for breakfast, I lost half of my teeth from poor nutrition, my liver was so huge that I had a 40" waist at 6' 168 pounds. My skin was cracking and bleeding. My family was at wits end, I lost my business.
My young friend, you have so much fantastic life and opportunity ahead of you that your head should be spinning with this fortune. Trust me. It would take pages here to expound on the life I have led since my first sober birthday at 40, places in the world I have been, amazing people I have met from Presidents to Hollywood celebs, wonderful friends I have made, family tradgedies and personal health issues I have concoured and turned into weapons in my arsenol, a wonderful wife and freakin amazing children and grandchildren and bodybuilding wise....dozens of bodybuilding articles I have penned in 5 different languages and some nice trophys on the shelf. I am looking forward to competing, God willing, in the Nationals at age 70.
So get up and get going. It's all yours for the taking.

Sir, that was the most inspirational passage I have read in a long time and I thank you for sharing it. If that doesn't get us all off of our butts today I don't know what will. I'm going to print it out, enlarge it, and hang it on the wall in my workout area downstairs. In the past I have watched the movie "Vision Quest" when I needed a kickstart or an old VHS of The Road Warriors versus the Russians (Ivan and Nikita Koloff). Yes, it was fake... but watching Road Warrior Animal catch all 280 pounds of Nikita Koloff in a bear hug as Nikita jumped off of the top of the ring post and not move more than a couple of inches downward into a squat used to make me want to run through walls. Turning to read your words will do the same thing...

I turn 44 on the 23rd... Just another year... Just another 1 to add... I feel better than ever... I think the hardest thing will be to remember the new number... I just got used to 43!!! Don't sweat it buddy... Remember that there are people your age and younger who have terrible issues in their lives because they don't take care of themselves... Be grateful that you are on the right track and will probably have a much better quality of life as you get older... Enjoy your birthday!!!
Peace...

Thank you all!
I didn't start this thread because I was feeling sorry for myself, or because I was looking for pity from the O35 community. I started this post to see if anyone else had felt the feelings that I was experiencing. Your posts are truly inspiring and they have made me realize that I need to continue being what I have been for the last 39 years, ME! There are so many of you in this forum, older than me, that are true role-models and I thank you for that. Today is not a day of apprehension, but rather a day of celebration in that I'm a little wiser and definitely a little stronger. Again, thank you to those that replied to this thread. The posts were more than I expected. I have one question though. What is the deal with the 20 yr. old posting a response to my thread?
