keto question

Hi, I always thought atkins/keto was bad for you because of all the fat and cholesterol and people always said that it could lead to blocked arteries etc. Im guessing this is wrong since so many people still do Keto diets.

So why does everyone think that Keto/atkins is so bad for you? And why is it that it isn't bad for you, aka why is it safe?

noob question but the patience and knowledge is much appreciated!

Maybe they're thinking that you'll keep that lifestyle of eating for your entire life. But people here just use it to diet for a few months. IMO, there's nothing wrong with it, and I even belive it's the most effective way to lose fat.

I believe its incredibly unhealthy, at least in my situation. I am not getting a wide spectrum of nutrients, its cheese and meat only for me.

Simply put, the people you see here talking about being on Keto tend to have VERY active workouts. I personally do six days a week, 2 cardio and 4 lifting.. plus I have a weekly ice hockey game.

If that changes the effect of the fat or not who knows, but the people during the atkins craze, did not work out. They mostly are the same fools who still do buy pills to drop weight, yet wont get off the couch.

Then why don't you add some low-carb vegetables? The body needs them.

When people say it's bad for you, it's because (1) they've been taught all their lives that fat is bad, and (2) in the case of the Atkins diet, they're only looking at the induction phase, where the variety of foods is very restricted. But even with those restrictions, you can still have a very healthy diet.

To answer the question of why it isn't bad for you, you need to read more. It's hard to go into the physiology in great detail here. But here's a hint: Fat on your BODY is bad; fat in your FOOD is good, and the way your body processes food, there's no particular relationship between one and the other. Think about cholesterol: People with high cholesterol tend to have high cholesterol even if there isn't much in their diet; other peopl can eat cholesterol all day long and never have high cholesterol in their blood. And obviously people who eat lots of protein aren't necessarily muscular. It's the same with fat and many other things.

Look at Eileen's posts. She's living proof that a keto diet is GREAT for you long-term. (She posted her bloodwork here a couple of weeks ago, and it's better than any vegetarian's will ever be.)

When I started Keto over a year ago, people thought I was just slowly killing myself. But at the sametime they couldn't believe the weight I was loosing. So many family members (who live in the south) who cook with lard, eat bacon everyday, eggs at almost every meal, etc...were critizing me for my diet! "You are going to die from all that cholesterol!!!" they would say. But the fact is, they and I were eating close to the samethings, but in different ways. They gained weight, and I lost. lol And they were in amazement.

The thing is, studies show that Atkins/Keto dieters have better results when blood tests come back of their LDL/HDL levels. Heart patients are put on diets before surgery or afterwards. Especially if they are severely obsese. Many of them are put on low carb diets because they know the weight will fall off.
There are good fats and bad fats. Knowing the difference is crucial. You dont go overboard eating TONS and TONS of fat. Just because FAT is in your diet doesn't mean you eat bacon grease all day. Knowing the difference in good/bad carbs, fats..is very crucial in the Atkins/Keto diets.

People who critizie diets are usually the ignorant. They dont care to research for find the facts or studies on something. Most people hear that your diet consists of "bacon, or eggs" and immediately go into "OMG! You are going to die" mode. It's because they hear and only know one side of the story.

If you show people facts, results, and studies, and educate the ignorant...the word will spread! But also know, that all food in some way can be harmful if it is abused...AKA..carbs.

Goodluck! And I've been there where you are. Questioning the diet..but no more. After I recieved my results (blood wise, and weight loss wise) I'm convienced that I will live the Keto lifestyle the rest of my life!

Goodluck!
