First in the fourth: Climbing to the top of the podium
Well folks, I have done another NAS LW Masters Nationals and I finished on the podium.... again.... and didn't win.... again.... I have what it takes, but maybe not enough of what it takes. Next year we will try again... So the 2009 LW Masters Nationals will be my fourth showing at that contest and my best opportunity to finish first. Each time I have finished in the money, gathering three national records on the way, but I have never won the title.
So I am starting a new thread so that I can track the training and do what needs to be done. The 2009 LW Masters Nationals haven't been announced, but I will do what needs to be done to be ready. Here are the goals:
Personal Goals:
1. Be more spiritual and put more emphasis on God's blessings to me rather than my pitiful attempts to excel. I cannot win without God. Daily bible study and daily prayer, especially early in the morning when I am the only awake anyway.
2. Integrate my training into my life with better balance... the children need me home more. So does my wife.
3. Be a good representative of the sport. I like the idea that I have become a part of the strongman community in a positive way. This sport has the greatest guys I have ever met. I have made my best friends through this sport.
Physical Goals:
1. Train like a bodybuilder for the next four months to work on hypertrophy and conditioning. Actually, its a body recomp sort of. If I get in better condition, keep my strength up and stay nearer to 230 that is perfect. I also believe that I will heal up some. Being ripped next summer wouldn't suck either.
2. Train with more volume, especially with event training. I have strength and speed and my endurance is okay. But I need conditioning for my muscles and connective tissues. Greater volume and faster training will help with that. I will have to drop the weights, but that is okay. I have a year. If I can get my weights where they are now, but with more volume I should be just that much better.
3. Get the diet under control with fewer carbs and more protein and veggie sources. Dropping weight for the contest really caused me to drop some BF and it was really cool to have abs!! Wow! Everyone said I looked better. I limited the carbs and the fat melted off. Of course, I will have to get better at this so I will rely on my bodybuilder friends.
4. Concentrate on accessory work more so that biceps, middle back, hammies are better conditioned.
5. Become more athletic with regular powercleans, regular ATG squats. Sprints and agility.
Its on!!

Who are you again? Everyone seems to know you but me...
Also, I noticed when looking at your thread that you said you think you're the strongest lawyer in America...I train with an attorney that would disagree. He's a former heavyweight pro who's down to 225lbs and still pulls in the 700s and has squatted over 900lbs equipped. You guys should get together.
*edit* Also, if you want to keep this as a journal (since you've linked to it as such), it's in the wrong forum. There's a strongman/powerlifting journal forum.

Are you kidding? All the drama we've had over posting things in the wrong forums and some mod I've never ever heard of comes in and says this guy can keep his journal in the main powerlifting section when no one else can? That's solid moderation, right there. Don't show up when people are trolling porn in their threads, but show up and MODERATE when someone nicely tells your buddy that's he posted his thread in the wrong section.
I'll likely get a vacation for posting this. Someone quote me.

I'm not a mod in this forum...so.
Blah, Blah...not into banning unless absolutely have to.
MS is a friend of mine, a good member, and solid contributor. If he posted his journal in the wrong place, he'll get it moved by a mod in this section.
If you had any idea of how many e-mails I get on a daily basis for reported threads for porn or whatever for the sections I mod in...it would make your head spin.

I got up to 19 on the right and 5 on the left and now my right is back down
I think my tendons being sore is what is causing this.

You'll go through phases like that. Make sure you take a day off between your grip training and 2 consecutive days once in a while. I don't train my grip when my hands are sore. Try alternating grip and levering too. Make sure to work the extensors, do some pinch work too. You do have to make sure you allow your hands and forearms to recover.

As long as we are talking about grip MS...are you going to do some grip specific training over the next year?

first things first... how do I move it? I really don't give a f+&: where it is so if this is wrong, I am happy to move it but don't know how.
secondly, who is your friend? is it Ryan Brown? he doesn't practice law anymore; he works for his family business i've been told. he is a great athlete and I am amazed that he is down to 225?! Wow! So many HWs are dropping down to the LWs nowadays!
finally, its my birthday, so thanks for the props and love you guys!

Yes, it is Ryan, and you're right, but we still consider him an attorney. I guess if your ego demands it, you can be the strongest currently practicing attorney in America. He's down to 225lbs and has become a hobby runner.

Hmmm.... you have issues, dude. I will move this thread out of your playground as soon as the mod does it for me.
I am not full of attitude. I don't want to mess with anyone I don't want to get into retarded cyber arguments. I think Ryan is a great athlete and I have nothing but props for him. But you don't know me. In fact, you MIGHT know me and we MIGHT be friends but instead you are being a douchebag.
And yes, Faith is important to me and while Paul does admonish us not to use crude language, there is no biblical prohibition against using that word. We are specifically told not to use God's name in vain and I don't do that. I hope that I can be a good representative, but I am full of flaws and don't deny it.
Good luck with your training. I hope you get a pro card. But you are very hostile for no reason. Have I done something to you? PM me if you think we have an issue. I don't know what it is.
Mike

I'm not going to argue Biblical commands with you, if you feel like you can be a great representative of your faith while using the vocabulary of an insolent teenager, that's your deal. I just feel like it's hypocritical, and I don't care for it. I'd be willing to bet that you wouldn't step up to the podium at your church of choice and let that sort of word fly, but hey, God's not EVERYWHERE, right?
You're also a bit arrogant, and even go so far as you name yourself "LW Masters Nats Champ"...even though you aren't.
Since on this website, I have only the right to speak my mind about it, I will, and I have.
*edit* Nice, you removed the "LW Masters Nats Champ".

You are right about that. I changed that right before I went to Omaha as motivation, but I have changed it back. I forgot it was there and thanks for pointing that out to me.
I checked your previous posts. Have you ever really read them? You don't have a nice thing to say to anyone. There is not one... NOT EVEN ONE... positive post to anyone. If you are so unhappy, who do you come here? I mean, of course you have the right to say anything you want... nobody is stopping you.
But here's the deal, man: I don't have anything but nice things to say to you and I am not going to get into an argument with you so that you can scratch that itch that you obviously have going on. But let me give you some advice. If you want to rise in the sport, you need to drop the attitude. This sport is filled with really good sportsman. Start helping the other guys who are coming up in the sport and you will find that you will do better if you start sharing your support and assistance to the other guys around you.
Just my $0.02. After all, if you have the right to your opinion, I also have the right to mine, right?

Freeride88, Mike is an exceptional strongman. Instead of trying to argue, you as well as I can learn alot from him.
