    Question Greek Yogurt??

So I tried Greek yogurt for the first time this morning...it was OK, but my question is this: I see that a lot of people on here use Greek yogurt instead of regular yogurt. Any idea why bbers seem to prefer it? less sugar maybe and higher protein? wasn't sure...

Much more protein! Plus it is thicker. Try adding honey and fruit or some artificial sweetener if you'd like.
If you need me, I'll be under 460+ pounds. If you find me on the floor, please get the weight off of me.

    Shut up and eat!

Thick and creamy, and the macros are different as you've noted - higher protein and fewer carbs.

Usually you'll need to sweeten it up since it's sort of tangy plain.

That stuff is so sour and thick that I can't eat it. Too much for me, but it's definitley awesome for you.

We both ( Sasa & Wendy) love Greek yogurt, and also we use in our diet "kefir"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kefir

Both products are high in protein.

usually I add artificial sweetener or honey (with pb, it's so rich and amazing)
but the best (IMO) is f*a*g*e 2%. it's so good, with more flavor than 0% fat.
dipping strawberries in it is amazing too.

It's got moderate carbs and HIGH protein and is more satisfying than regular yogurt, to me.

Thank you all SOOOOOOOOO much for the info and advice!! I did think it was very plain, and a little sour, but I think it's one of those things that will grow on me, especially with some sugar free stuff, honey, etc. added to it. Thank you!!!!

Trader Joes has three different options of greek yogurts....basically three different fat levels. From what I've seen, their prices are hands down the best for greek yogurt. I add a 1/2 a packet of stevia to it since it only contains 9gm sugar.

I bought 1 container from Trader Joe's since it was the first time I had ever seen it. It came with a side pack of honey that you dip it in. It was a little sour but I enjoyed it overall. My one problem is that I believe it had a lot of sat. fat in it. A very high percentage.
What are you on about mate?

Get nonfat, plain greek. Who cares what it tastes like - eat it and like it!~!~! I usually eat with a banana and 2.5 tbsp of hemp seeds. That way you get, fruit micronutrients and fiber, plus large dose of protein from greek yogurt and ample amt of protein from hemp seeds with good fats! The key to every meal is to evenly spread macronutrients.

Just make your own. All it is is drained regular yogurt with a heavier price tag. Buy the large sized yogurt for $3 and profit.

Thanks for that link! I literally had this discussion with my g/f & mom this past week as I recall reading about how to "make" your own greek yogurt a long time ago.

Non fat greek yogurt+1/2 scoop of your favorite protein powder+dash of stevia= phenomenal power pudding. My personal favorites proteins to add are MyoFusion Banana and XF Cinnamon Roll.

Its a perfect snack before bed with pure casein protein and mixed with whey protein as well.

Put about 200grams (16g) in a bowl, put about 1,1.5 tsp of honey and stir it for a minute. Then, add some walnuts and i tell you, its one of the most awesome and healthy things to eat and quit reach in protein . You could also add some diced apple to the mix!

Here in Greece, F.a.g.e (the companies name, as mentioned quite above) is one of the best you can get!

I also use greek yogurt as a replacement for any recipe that calls for sour cream. When I eat it by itself i'll add a packet of splenda and some chopped up fruit.

Just wondering how much you guys pay for a thing of greek yogurt, and if anyone knows a cheap place to get it.

I get mine at Trader Joe's and its ridiculously expensive.

can't believe nobody suggested this yet, but if I'm eating it in the morning or anytime before my workout, I'll stir in some low fat granola with raisins with my non fat greek yogurt, the flavors contrast nicely and it changes the testure nicely

personal favorite is chobani's vanilla, but they only have that and nonflavored at my local supermarket

    Options to try...

As most have stated, it's a great source of protein. If not already listed above, try a scoop of protein powder to add flavor...or my fav, a tablespoon of instant sugar-free/fat-free jello pudding mix (preferably a choc. or white choc)..it's absolutely delicious!! (PROMISE)

Im confused by this link. This whole thread is saying that greek yogurt has much higher protein, but in the article its saying that the stuff that you strain out is mostly WHEY. So how is it possible that you strained protein out of normal yogurt and ended up with a higher protein yogurt?

If they strain out the whey, then it makes sense that the protein that's left is casein, so it'll digest slowly and last longer.

You are straining out a lot of water weight, so the protein to weight ratio changes. Kind of like cooking a steak or chicken, it becomes drier but the protein stays, so the protein per oz increase.

    Wink

I recently added a half of scoop of my protein powder to my greek yogurt and OH MY, it was amazing! I find protein powders REALLY sweet. Almost painfully sweet so i get creative. It seems weird at first and requires a steady stir but talk about a TON of protein in a snack. It reminds me of those protein puddings that are now on the market. Ooh and add come strong coffee and strawberries and get to the gym fast b/c you'll be ready to LIFT!

It was my first time trying the non fat plain greek yogurt. 100g of greek yogurt, 170g of honeydew, 1 tsp low sugar strawberry jam, 8g walnut with my casein shake on the side.

    adds up to around : 6.5 F, 30 C, 36.5 P.

THE BEST SNACK I'VE EVER HAD SINCE I STARTED DOING MACROS. OMG. you guys should def try it.
I will definitely try new recipe next time.
