Good luck. Gotta admit, that first week I was scared as f*ck, then for two weeks after that I was depressed as f*ck, but then it was all good. Some great memories.

Actually, you're starting and finishing in San Diego. Pendleton is just a few weeks in the middle.

I wanna go to boot camp because I believe the Marines are the hardest of them all. I think their the most warrior oriented. Yeah I pledged my oath so it is mandatory.

We can choose if went to or not but once we give the oath their ain't no turning back .

All military service in the US is voluntary. He can choose whether or not to enlist, and he can join any branch he's qualified for.

Actually, I've heard you can back down all the way up until the day you ship off. Not sure how true it is. But anyway, good choice with 0311. After your ten days of leave you should have another fun 3 months or so at SOI West. As for Asians not having big cojones, be proud that you're not being sterotypical. I'm from an upper class, New York Jewish family and had the 2nd highest SAT score in my graduating class yet I chose to enlist right out of HS. In my year and a half in the corps I've yet to meet one other enlisted Jew (met an officer, though) and people are astonished when they hear it, haha.
Best advice I can give you is just tough it out those first few weeks, that's the worst and it's designed that way. Just keep the ultimate goal in mind. No matter how ****ty you feel inside, don't show it. They prey on weakness.

Good luck. I kind of want to join the military for the discipline, but right now is not a great time for me.

I am thinking about joining the reserves sometime down the line.

Is there a way to jump up to officer if you have a college degree or something? I heard something like that. Also is there a law where you can't get fired for doing your training every month from your regular job?

Most enlistment contracts are four years active duty, followed by four years inactive reserves. At the end of those initial four years, he could just to re-enlist (usually for another four), provided he hadn't done anything to disqualify himself along the way.
