What's the deal with mayonnaise???
Question: If the main ingredient in mayo is eggs...why doesn't this goopy white gel contain any protein????
Look at the nutrition label - ZERO protein! But it's main ingredient is eggs?????

Not really, the main ingredient in the commercial mayonnaises is oil, like 80% of it.
if egg percentaje is maybe 15%, and only about 13% of it is protein, then only about 1-2% of the mayonnaise is protein, which is the usual value i think.

That is, unless your diet is too low in saturated fat...something men need a little bit of everyday.

Excellent point . I never thought about it .. low fat mayo contains probably less than 0.01% eggs the rest is fillers.. starches and hydrogenated crap..
Real mayo you have to make yourself and it is awesome and highly nutritious..
the stuff in the jar probably contains such a low % of eggs and they are probably processed so they lose most of the little protein they have
remember mayo is made with only egg yolks not whole eggs

Mayonaisse is a decent source of vitamin E and a few other nutrients as I recall. A teaspoon a day is fine. The ingredients are fine as well.
You can make healthier Mayo...but who wants to be bothered with all that?
And to the original poster...yeah, good point about the protein content. Maybe they only use the yoke? Dunno.
You can do alot worse than eating some mayo now and then.

Err - most commercial mayonnaise is junk food.
Low quality fat + low quality carbs (sugar) = junk food.

The stuff is horrid nutritionally and has no place in a BB'ers diet, I haven't had a taste in 2 years and really don't miss it.

Only a tablespoon in a whole big bowl of a salad/sandwich spread. I think people make much too big a deal out of it. We don't eat it like ice cream. If you break it down to the actual quantitative value of, say, a tuna salad sandwich, you're only getting a sliver that "bad" stuff.
People should loosen the reins on mayo a tad, IMO.

Hi buddy,
I agree with this, but only to a point... The problem is that when people "loosen the reigns" they start to let little bits of crap into their diet. It's not easy to "eat clean" because most products contain some crap or another, but the idea should be to eat as clean as possible... To say, "Oh, this little bit isn't really that bad for me" can be a dangerous thing because once you say it, you tend to say it too many times about too many things... In my humble opinion, mayonnaise isn't one of those good things that should be eaten... Just sayn'...
Peace...

This is my theory, I like mayo and I couldn't imagine eating a turkey sandwich with out. That one butter knife smear of the stuff won't unravel my hours in the gym.

mayonnaise is perhaps the most disgusting and useless 'food' on the planet!
it is made by emulsifying egg yolks and oil.
the reason it has zero protein is that most of the protein in eggs resides in the whites, the yolk contains all the fat and cholesterol...
mayonnaise is virtually 100% fat!

Well I love mayo and it hasn't affected me. My body is still streamlined and the envy of many. *wakes up from fantasy*
I am now down to 226 pounds, the lowest I have been since a teenager. Can't wait to get under the 200 barrier.

For the record..I totally avoid the mayo. Can't remember the last time I ate any.
I am just a compulsive label reader.
And it's one of those things that make you go.."Hmmm???"

Personally I don't like the vinegar taste. Miracle Whip or equivalent is more to my liking. I suppose someone is going to tell me it contains arsenic or something.

On the very rare occasions that I use any, I use the Smart Balance, and use just enough to hold tuna or eggs together to make a sandwich. Other then that, I have no use for it.
Living in Maryland, if you order a sandwich or burger out somewhere, you have to remember to tell them NOT to put mayo on it. I think it's the state food or something.

Real mayo is great, and easy to make it yourself, so there are health benefits to it. Separate egg yolks, put in blender, squeeze in 1/2 lemon, pinch of salt; start blender on lowest setting and drizzle in evoo to desired consistency. Great thing about this is you can add flavors to it. Roasted garlic, sundried tomatoes and fresh basil, chipotle's & caramelized onions...it's endless.
