Are pull ups and chin ups good for building mass?

If so, which variation recruit the most muscle fibres - wide-grip or narrow-grip?

    Yes and both.

Wide grip will promote upper lat development. Giving a wider V taper appearance

Narrow grip will promote lower lat development and some upper arm development.
