Bill Starr/Madcow Intermediate 5X5 Question - More Intensity Wanted!

I know, I know. If I'm going to follow this program then I shouldn't mess with it at all but I'm two weeks in and I just don't feel like the intensity is there weight-wise. I put in my stats on the online Madcow calculator and in every set I feel as if I could do more. Should I just stick with what the calculator tells me to progress at or should I keep raising the weight when I get all 5 reps? Personally, I don't feel as if I'm getting a good workout unless I'm killing myself each set.

    Appreciate the advice!

Of course the intensity is not there. You should be able to feel as if you could do more right now. You are in the second week of the program. It isn't supposed to be heavy yet, and for good reason.

Have you read the program description to understand why it's set up the way it is? Have you looked ahead on the spreadsheet to see what will happen in the coming weeks?

If you only "feel" you are getting a good workout by killing yourself, as you put it, maybe you should try that approach every session from now on and see where it gets you.

Yeah, I've looked ahead and basically I'm supposed to progress 5lbs every week. So you're saying that it's normal that the intensity isn't there just yet since I'm only two weeks in?

Yes. You build back up to your max over four weeks.

What do you think would happen if you started at your max in week 1 using the additional tonnage prescribed by the program?

    Not for long.

It will get harder in a few weeks; and, eventually, it will become so difficult you can no longer continue without lowering the weights down again. When that happens is highly individual, but in inevitably happens to everyone.

You must be patient when using this style of training.

Alright, I understand what you're gettin' at. I'll stick it out until the 12 weeks are over.

Thanks for the advice, mjw. I'd rep if I could !
