    only things i can think of off the top of my head

    down shifting instead of riding the breaks down a hill

    and some cars if you put it in 2nd gear it will start in second gear and makes you slip less when it snows

    I would love to think your just joking, but just in case...

    It's a type of manual over-ride for your automatic transmission. There are times, like when your towing something on gravel or in loose soil, that you don't want your trans. to shift. For example, if your wheels slip while trying to pull your friend's truck out of the mud your trans. might think it's time to shift to a higher gear. Not what you want, so you make sure your in 1st gear and can't come out until you want to.

    whenever I'm going down a hill or offroading I use my 1,2 gears a lot instead of riding my breaks.

    going up big hills or need extra traction and what not I also use my 1,2 gears.

    youre overthinking it. when you select 1 (or 2,3), the transmission stays in that gear until you "shift" it. On the contrary, the auto uses all three and shifts for you. We can continue to discuss the reasons why one would want to do this, but im not sure thats what you asked in the original post.
