Ok here's the deal my roomate told me my friend Matt got this advice from a friend of his to only eat one meal a day to lose weight and to do cardio. I mean seriously?!?!?! WTF?!?!? Who thinks like this? Who really eats only one meal per day and his reasoning is that he gets enough food for the day he just eats it at once. I'm sitting here thinking lol he's going to put that weight back on so much faster then he realizes. So my question to all you nutrition buffs is how do I approach him with a better meal plan since he doesn't listen to me (although I'm a paid personal trainer) but listens to the other guy (who isnt a trainer)who does testosterone and insulin and all these other kinds of pills to get big.
Positive responses will be repped and negative ones well you will be getting negged. I don't want my friend to get injured but he apparently thinks the other guy is right.

Well in my opinion this 5-6 meals a day for me leaves me feeling like crap, between periods im constantly thinking about what im going to be eating next.
So I would recommend the standard 3 meals a day. Im on a cut right now using keto and im taking in about 2000-2300 cals a day. So I eat about 700 cals per meal which is enough to satisfy me and make me feel like I ate an actual meal. Also with 3 big meals it keeps metabolism going steady. Id definitely recommend to give that a shot.
Also keep in mind im cutting cals at a really quick rate
my bmr is 2100 and I burn about 1500ish (hr monitor) at the gym
so his cals per meal (depending on his bmr/weight loss goals ect) could be alot higher.

Just tell him that 5-6 meals will keep him feeling fuller with more energy to have throughout the day, one large meal will probably leave him feeling EXTREMELY tired after and like he has to take a nap. If you say 5-6 meals a day = more energy = happier then he will take the advice and trust your judgement, if he doesnt get it now, he will later when he realizes that one meal a day is horrendous for sustained energy and would negatively affect his workouts (if he works out)

How's he going to get all of his calories he needs in one meal? It sounds like he needs to try it and find out for himself. If he only eats once a day he's gonna feel lethargic and not have enough energy to accomplish what he needs to in the gym, eventually he won't even want to go. Thats when you make your move and tell him try eating atleast 3 meals a day. I bet he'll notice a big difference in his energy levels. Then you tell him he's dumb for not listening to a PT as opposed to some dude in a gym.

It sounds kinda like somone advised him to follow a warrior style diet. I wont say it doesn't work, as I've followed similar plans in the past, but my best bodycomp results for a diet, came from a diet of oil and PSMF diets...
If you want some more info on warrior style diets, here is a thread about them, this will atleast give you an understanding of the reasoning behind the diet so you can make better educated arguments for it or against it.

Eating once a day on a cut is fine if it gets the job done. Maybe not every day though. He's not endangering his health in any way- quite the contrary.

So yeah for now I'm pissed but when he gets injured working out with this one guy cause he doesn't do proper form then he'll be asking me for help. Oh and he says he hurt his groin walking the other day another load of garbage from this kid. lol

well this dude in a gym is also someone we've both known for a while but the guy is a douchebag and thinks he knows everything about everything too and is NEVER wrong at all. So since I get paid to do this I will be just working on getting clients and when he asks me for advice I'm just going to do what he does to me and ignore him and tell hiimtoo bad dude.

Sounds like intermittent fasting:

theoretically, so long as he's getting in enough calories and protein he should be fine (in terms of body composition)... but there are much are much healthier options for bulking/cutting
i cant imagine the bloating and lethargy after that monster meal everyday thought.

Heres my take on it:
From what I understand if you eat 1 large meal a day then your body gets used to "storing the food for later energy use" as fat. So basically he is training his body to store fat more efficiently rather than eating 5 to 6 times a day. Also with eating more often you could take into consideration the thermic effect of food... meaning every time you eat your body is going to start processing food, then warms up... burning calories (not that many, but it does have an influence). I also believe that the timing of meals has an influence on body fat and muscle. For example doing a post workout shake high in protein will aid in muscle hypertrophy.-----WORK HARD, PLAY HARDER-----

The only benefit of eating more than once or twice a day is increased amino acid absorption throughout the day and more time spent in an anabolic state - thus it is optimal to eat at least 3 times a day.
Food quality does not change the laws of thermodynamics. Provided you consume adequate protein, EFAs, fiber, and vitamins and minerals you can eat whatever you want.
The only difference between a 'clean' and a 'dirty' food is how much of it you eat.
The Glycemic Index is meaningless unless you eat carbs alone in a fasted state. As soon as you add fat, protein, or fiber to a meal or have eaten in the previous 4-6 hours the GI is irrelevant.
