I am planning on running an ultramarathon (50+ mil) in the next few months and I would love some advice on nutrition.... I don't want to loose all my muscle, now I know this is possible because I have seen it... so don't tell me it can't be done...
Does anyone have any advice on nutrition? How many cals etc...
I am 150 and 5 '11... I am hesitant to follow what I've heard from other people as to cal intake-8,000+ whatever! seems like it would kill me
I would really appreciate the insight
We could get a bet going... I will run an ultramarathon and gain lean muscle mass

Running 50+miles? Are you serious? 8,000kcal is easily an underestimate if anything.

I suggest talking to an ultramarathon runner. Most of the people on this forum focus on strength routines that are largely counterproductive to long distance endurance- assuming you desire success in either sport. I've run 10+ milers, and I've hiked 25ish miles with a 65lb pack. During both events, I was more concerned with fluids, salts, and not breaking anything than I was with supplying calories. The heavier you are, the greater impact your bones and joints will take. Be careful and goodluck.

Eatting enough and maintaining a large mass while trying to train for ultras (i.e. extreme volume) doesn't work (read up on mTOR and the effects of training both aerobic/resistance at the same time)
Set a goal OP - you can't preserve all your mass but you should be able to preserve some/most if done properly.Blog:
