170lbs....leg press 500+
I have just recently added leg press to my strength program. Out of curiosity what is a good weight for me to be maxing out on for leg press?
I'm 18, 6', 170lbs. and do 480x5, 1RM 500+. Is this decent? my goal is 600+ while keeping weight at 180.

so 530lbs. sucks? even at 170, and only 8%BF? It at least makes me feel good to load 4 plates on each side everyday. I add about 25lb. every week...

my squats are actually weak...225x8 reps...don't know why, but they put a lot of strain on my knees.

Well, do you go Ass To Sled on those presses? None of this pussy ****, half-rep leg pressing to parallel like most people around these parts do.
You didn't mention if you use an athletic, narrow stance for your leg pressing? That would make it more impressive. Also you need to tell us how long your legs are. The longer your legs, the more impressive the leg pressing. Do you pause at the bottom or cheat and bounce like a fat kid pretending to bench press?
Without this important information we can't really help you that much.

If you're not leg pressing over 2000lbs or over 1000lbs and are over 70 years old, don't tell anyone you leg press.

Yes, ass to sled is how its done...better to do 480lbs ass to sled than 600 half...get more results from the right technique. At 6'0, im 60/40 legs, and I use a shoulder width grip, and no I use a 4-2-1 tempo. The only explosion is upwards. Going down takes 4 sec. and I pause for 2. Thats why I can go up everyweek. Good form (I'm training strength)

remember people I'm 170lbs. leg pressing 1000lbs. is nearly 5x my bodyweight. A bit extreme don't you think.

Well in that case it sounds pretty damn impressive!
If you were a fat kid, using a wider stance and not going all the way down ATG then it wouldn't be very good at all... not at all impressive. In fact it would be grounds for someone to call you fat and say you suck at lifting over and over and over again.
But since low weight lifts done slowly, with a pause, ATG by small people with long limbs are more impressive, I would say that's the equivalent of at least a 600lb squat.

There is no correlation between different types of leg press, ROM is difficult to judge, etc.
Really, not the most applicable lift to improve your squat, either.

my squatting is far weaker, but for some reason squatting puts pretty bad stress on my knees and leg press doesn't. I'm gonna try to invest in some straps. But yeah, I don't like to throw up massive amounts of weight only going down 12 inches. All your gonna do is get laughter, not stronger.

leg press is awful. don't ever say anything about your leg press "stats" ever again.
learn how to squat. it puts a lot of strain on your knees because you're doing it wrong.

actually, I've been doing squats for a while...the stress is new, under the bottom pat of the kneecap, but I lift through it, but am only currently throwing up 225x5, but at one time was doing 300+ 5x....my leg lifts tend to go up fast.

I leg press so much that I no longer do the exercise just because its pointless
I can do 600 for a few reps on squats or I can load up 2000lbs on leg press, GEEE wonder which one Im going to go for.

i don't care if you've been doing them for a while, you're experiencing joint pain during the lift which is indicative of poor technique/form.
but you could always ignore people who squat 2-3x what you do and keep leg pressing your way to stardom.

On my squats I know its from not so much technique as leg position...I'm still in the "adjusting" phase to find that "sweet spot" where my legs feel really comfortable...does anyone know what I mean? I've been into strength triaining for like 5 weeks now and its a change, its real demanding on your body, so I'm still adjusting

no...you're doing it wrong.
if you think the leg press is legitimate strength builder your credibility as to your ability to judge your own squat form is 0.

All I know is my feet are slighter wider than shoulder press, and when I go down, I keep my chest out, and go down to parellel and then explode up...how can that be wrong...in terms of squat..whats a good type of program for strength to go up fast??? I'm currently on a 5x5. Is there something better? Maybe German Volume Training?

Read the post....I asked for help...I've been STRENGTH training for 5 weeks. I used to just do Hypertrophy, but decided that I would rather weigh 180 and throw up more weight than heavier people. So please starting advice is well adviced.

Having a big leg press is kinda like buying expensive cloths, buying expensive cars, and other things that look real cool. it may look cool, but deep down inside your still a big ****in tool.
To all the other people on this page that are insulting him, calling him weak, etc; realize this, some people just dont know any better, so dont insult him, just explain it to him.

Dirty Bulk
You also have to take into consideration the mechanical advantage inherent to many leg press machines. Depending on their configuration your 500 pounds could shrink dramatically. In fact, it's probably closer to and effective 353 pounds.
Also, everyone here HATES the leg press.
