About half hour before I'd say. Wouldnt take it right before cause you'll probably end up spewing it back up while your running

I would say after the race. All "energy" drinks (Monster, Red Bull, ect.) do is dehydrate you. The best thing BEFORE a race or a game is water.

Even better idea...DON'T. All of it is **** anyways. If you feel you need a pick me up go to the local drugstore and buy Nodoz. Caffeine has been shown on NUMEROUS occasions to be one of the best supps out there. Take 2 of those equal to 400mg and your set. Goodluck

Do not take an energy drink before an endurance sport first of all. I would probably drink gatorade or water.

Nodoz = 200mg Caffeine pills. Cheap and effective.
5 Hour Energy is just another energy drink.

The only difference is that 5 hour energy has no sugar. It has the same common stimulants that other energy drinks have just not as much, and there are others that have zero sugar. Basically, it's a weaker version of other common low/no-carb energy drinks. Learn to read labels and stop believing everything companies tell you.

I could be wrong but I believe the caffeine is what dehydrates you ... so pills still will affect the body.

35 minutes before hand.
This would allow optimum time for the glutamic acid to be absorbed into your pancreas.

I wasn't reccomending he take it, just letting him know what NoDoz is.
Personally, for endurance activities I would be less concerned with the dehydrating effect of various stimulants and more concerned with the resulting increase in heart rate. I've had times where stimulants actually made me have to cut back during intense conditioning because of that.
