You don't have to rotate anything to damage a rotator cuff, it can happen a lot of ways. The issue is that it's not meant to comfortably support weight behind your back like that, it really just puts extra pull on it. I'm not saying you'll get injured obviously, I'm just saying it does increase the chance of something happening.

C'mon seriously you cant say they were good shrugs watch the video your shoulders would be lucky to rise 2 inches.
That being said if the sit works then keep doing it i sometimes sacrifice perfect form for higher weights to shock my muscles and i have had immense gains from this, particularly on my Bi's.Life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think.
