Japan starts $9 billion program to build SPACE ELEVATOR!!!111!!!
The finest scientific minds of Japan are devoting themselves to cracking the greatest sci-fi vision of all: the space elevator.
The space elevator represents the most tantalising of concepts: 22,000 mile long cables stronger and lighter than any fibre yet woven, tethered to the ground and disappearing beyond the atmosphere to a satellite docking station in geosynchronous orbit above Earth.

Literally the elevator to ****ing no where.
They would charge like $5000 just to have 1 shot at it.

i really don't see how this can be done. so many different temperatures, rotation, the fact that it's 22,000 miles . . .
i don't believe it. an asteroid would fuk that thing up.
however, it would be another way to be inducted into the Mile-High Club.

That's actually OLD news. I remember reading about a "space elevator" when I was in high school. It was just that no one thought it plausible to actually construct one. It was talked about that the "space elevator" would connect to the current Int'l Space Station and that the U.S. would probably fit the bill for it.
I guess Japan wants to make a better name for itself now.

I'd like to call this project FAIL
too many external factors that can harm the elevator, let alone all te internal crap they'd have to put up with.... 22k mile elevator? LULZ

That's pretty sweet. How would it stand up? Would the inertia of whatever it attached to in space be what keeps the structure pointing straight up?
Just like the article said, no more radioactive wastes... we could throw anything we didn't want towards the sun.
There are probably 1000's of possibilities we couldn't think of.

"Riding silently into the sky, soon she was 100km high, higher even than the old pioneering rocket planes, the X15s, used to reach. The sky was already all but black above her, with a twinkling of stars right at the zenith, the point to which the ribbon, gold-bright in the sunlight, pointed like an arrow.
Looking up that way she could see no sign of structures further up the ribbon, no sign of the counterweight. Nothing but the shining beads of more spiders clambering up this thread to the sky. She suspected she still had not grasped the scale of the elevator, not remotely."

anyone know how fast the elevators are supposed to travel? if the elevators travelled at 100 mph, it would take 9 days to reach the top of that thing.
