Question about Whey
At this point, I am only having protein shakes as an after workout supplement. I bought a huge thing of good tasting whey tonight and now I am curious if I can supplement my diet with whey throughout the day. Meats are getting expensive and I am just curious what the thought is on having protein shakes outside of post-workout just to get macros
If anyone has any opinions or experiences, your thoughts are appreciated.

No, protein shakes are not food plus they will cause an insulin spike. They are a suppliment, not nutrition.
Eat real food.

false.
well not completely false, very incorrect. Sure whole foods are better but if you'd like to add 1 or 2 shakes as meal replacements go right ahead.
yes they are a supplement and should be used as so. to supplement your body with good quality protein when you can't/don't want to cook a full meal.
several people use shakes on the go or in a pinch to get protein. it's fine.

Protein shakes aren't meant to be strictly post-workout, that's just the time that (according to the general consensus) they are most useful.
Feel free to have them whenever you want, but try and get the majority of your calories through whole food.

It'd be unhealthy to eat too much whey.
My vote is to stick to having a post workout shake, but you can add whey to another meal. Throw it in some oatmeal or something.

If the body needs protein give it what it needs. Should be getting it every 2 hours or so.

shakes should be used maybe twice a day at most. But from what I am seeing from the OP, he is going to be having a shake more than that from what I am hearing from him.
It is not healthy to be eating shake as a full meal replacement. It doesn't have the nutrition other than protein that the body needs.
Get your calories from real food, not shakes which will not give you no realtive nutritional value.

hmmm, I think shakes can be very healthy. some protein has added vitamins and minerals, plus you can add fruit, dairy, grains etc. shakes can be very healthy if done right.

i eat a pretty good amount of soy, whey and casien protein powder. Powders are derived mainly from milk and usually have artificial sweeteners added to them. im not sure whats bad about having more than 2 shakes like you are talking about..
Also isnt anything that digests quickly going to trigger an insulin spike?
do you have any good reason for this or an article or something?

x2. I usually have 2 shakes a day. 1 in the morning and 1 post workout. But sometimes I have one in the middle of the day too, when I dont have much time to eat and I want to supplement my body with some protein.

also to the OP. while the shakes are perfectly fine you mentioned that meats are getting expensive so why not look into other forms of protein?
String and cottage cheese are fast/cheap sources of protein that don't need cooking. nuts and string cheese are a quick and tasty snack when you need protein and fat. or mix fruit in Cottage cheese and add some flaxseed. hella good and no need for cooking.
just a few suggestions. good luck.

Thanks for all the replies.
CanuckTank - I wasn't referring to having more than a couple shakes a day and was really just wanting to know everyone's thoughts
Cy15 - I do eat and enjoy CC. I live in Brooklyn and there are certain weird foods that are for no reason whatsoever very expensive at my market - CC is one of them
Oh, and I guess I should clarify that I do get 90% of my macros from real food and will continue to do so

I limmit my whey intake to the mornings and PWO. Don't really need it at other times. These are the only times I really crave anything sweet anyways.

I do not recommend a complete liquid diet for the fact that your body is meant to digest food.
On the other hand I feel its perfectly fine to take up to 3 shakes a day mixed with skim milk, peanut butter and rolled oats. Its hard to get your 6 - 8 meals in a day, especially with the economy the way it is.
What I personally do is I buy straight chocolate whey, a few tubs of rolled oats and a couple cans of peanuts. I put the rolled oats into the blender dry and mix them into a powder. I do the same with the peanuts (peanuts are a little tricky, but it helps to put them in the freezer before putting them in the blender, otherwise the powder will start to get sticky after about a cup). I take both mixtures and I put them with my chocolate whey in a bag, mix it up, and that's my MRP shakes for however long the bag lasts me.

These forums over-exaggerate the amount of protein that we actually do need by alot.

Those of you that believe whey is somehow unhealthy are morons - seriously, WTF???
Those of you that believe drinking protein is somehow inferior to eating it are morons - all food is liquid by the time it reaches the small intestine.
Those of you that believe you have to eat every two hours are morons - I don't even want to get into this...
That is all...
