Whey Protein
* I did a search before someone yells at me but random things keep coming up *
Is the purpose of this stuff to make you gain or lose? I was thinking of ordering some. Thanks!

The purpose (one of them, anyway) of it is to help with muscle growth, which is important whether your are trying to gain or lose.
I, for instance, am trying to lose fat. However, I want to maintain the muscles I do have, as more muscle=better metabolism=fat loss. Thus, I take in roughly 1g protein per lb of bodyweight a day. Now, that would be a hell of a lot of food, so drinking whey protein helps me meet my daily requirement more easily.

Neither. It's to provide extra grams of protein if you can't get your required amount with real food.

As Tiffany_P said, NEITHER. Protein powder is to supplement your diet to ensure that you get in the required amount of protein that your body needs If you're doing resistance training, then you should be aiming for 1.0-1.7g/kg/day of protein (Tarnopolsky, 2006), but the general thing most people do is 1g/lb/day. Whey protein is a fast acting protein, which makes it ideal for post-resistance training, and recovery.

You're NOT getting any protein? You get protein in your diet (i.e. eggs, dairy, fish, seafood, chickens, beef, venison, etc.; and also beans, tofu, etc.), even if you ARE a vegetarian!

there are some protein shakes out there with added calories (like muscle milk and muscle juice), and I would classify those as meal replacements, or calorie boosters for those looking to gain weight/muscle. Other whey isolates (like Scivation or ON), are for cutting/everyday use, IMO.

the only amount i get is from dairy and i dont eat it everyday. I dont eat tofu or beans, fish, etc. I am going to try to add tofu into my diet. I think it would be good for me.

I think it would be good for you try some tofu! You can experiment with supplementing with a whey protien to decide wether or not you like it. I find most people will make a shake a part of thier routine diets to help recovery form workouts. I personally like to use Isopure brand, it is fairly low in calories, no carbs and has 50g of protien. You could also use one scoop if you like (25g of protien) to supplement your diet.

So all you eat is dairy, fat, and simple sugars? Because you DO get INcomplete proteins from most foods (aside from meat, which is complete protein). I would recommend trying to get as much protein as possible from your diet, and then supplement the rest using protein powder/s. Regardless of your goal, you need to have your DIET in check to achieve results. You should be more concerned about eating properly than anything else.
