O/T Wow, very touching concern!
Well, my first OT thread that I'm starting. In the last 2 days I've received 12 different private messages with concern for me, and even 3 offers of places to stay if I need it during the upcoming hurricane!
I am left almost speechless at this. I'm going to respond to each and every one, but before I do, I figured I'd post here to allay any other concerns.
I am still offshore right now, I was supposed to be going home tomorrow, but with the activity in the Gulf, and the Gulf coast over the next few days, Thursday is looking like the earliest day I will be getting home.
I am absolutely fine though. The rig I work on started pulling riser last wednesday, and started moving to the southwest at 4.2kts 2 days ago. we are well out of the storms path and just fine. Even if we were still in the storms path, the particular deepwater driller I'm on was built to handle weather in the North Sea. We have an excellent ballasting system onboard, 8 huge thrusters, and are a class 3 DP (dynamic positioning vessel). This rig was made to handle extreme weather conditions. Because we are a DP vessel, and not a "mooring" type rig, we cannot abandon the rig whenever a storm comes through, but it's ok, we're made to handle the weather, and this rig has handled catagory 5 weather before with minimum damage. My home is in Northwest Houston, well away from the danger of surge areas, and far enough inland where the worst I should ever experience from one of these storms is some wind damage.
It is amazing to me that I've received so many PM's inquiring about my well being, and even 3 offering me shelter should I have need of it. With all the negative stuff we hear day in and day out.. it's such a breath of fresh air to be reminded through such generous gestures that there are still such great people out there. Thank you.
