for a while i was just taking 5 mL thinking ml = gram but that only holds true for water (nubscience)

1,000 mg = 1 gram. So, 5,000 mg = 5 grams. Now if you're talking liters, which is a liquid measurement to grams which is a mass unit, than it would depend on the weigh, density, etc of the liquid. Buy a food scale and start filling up until you reach 5 grams.
