Metformin, Diet, Exercise.
Avoid supplements and save the money to see a dietician, get a dilated eye exam, get a foot exam, and follow with a PCP.

multi
fish oil
optimum 100% whey (because there is only 1g sugar and 3 carbs)
creatine
anything that is pretty low in sugar and carbs should be fine
tell your friend to go to the doctor and ask him if the products above are ok for him before he begins to take anything

Hey is he type 1 or 2? Im assuming 2.
Check out this thread: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...ype+1+Diabetic
Personally im note experienced with weight loss supps but I wouldn’t take anything that could potentially mess with my sugar levels.
Sticking to multi, fish oil, plain creatine and some Whey.
Andy.

His wife is a personal trainer and he is a little too proud to see a dietician. He has had all the exams already...I can't recall what type it is....they said he could get it under control with diet and exercise. He is 6'8 and weighs about 310, the doctors told him he had to lose 100lbs!! Almost pee'd myself when he told me, he is training to be on the same strength ministry as I am, so I am going to start training him for strenth feats....not gonna happen if he's 200 lbs.

Creatine for a diabetic? Great choice........I'm guessing you're not a nephrologist. How about we shoot for 2g/kg protein daily, as well and totally shoot his kidneys.
I'm negging you despite the "go see a doctor" because you clearly don't know **** and shouldn't answer this question.

I'd say his ability to see, achieve an erection, keep his legs, and not have a heart attack are a tad more important than strength feats for now.
Health first, always, even if you have to set pride aside.

Im type 1 diabetic and provided that it is under control there should be no problem taking creatine and large amounts of protein. I?ve had kidney checks etc from before and after starting creatine and they are fine.
But agreed that you should really only listen to diabetics/specialist doctors because they are the only ones who understand how your sugars work.
If I were him I’d just eat clean and exercise.
Andy.

You are 21 years old. Assuming your sugar is well controlled, you are close to 'normal.'
As you age, I'd strongly suggest lowering the protein dose and cutting out creatine. Clearly the A1C is important, but the other organs are what matter most.

I completely agree, but he has a fairly big structure and 200 lbs at 6'8 seems a tad extreme, don't you think?

To be fair, most physicians love to overshoot like that......assuimg the patient will at least make a better effort if they think the goal is crazy high.
Regarding the 200lbs at 6'8", that'd make his BMI somewhere around 22ish which is right in the middle of normal. I'd say 220-230 should be his upper limit as a diabetic, and that is assuming his sugar, blood pressure, and kidney values all look excellent.
The disease is life altering, but it doesn't need to be life limiting or life ending.
