Anyone know where to get those magnetic 1lb weights that you can put on your Dumbbells at the gym to slowly add 1 pound instead of the 5 pound leaps?

There you go. 1.25lb increments. VERY DURABLE. Magnets are stackable for me. So get two 4 weight sets of each.

go to a surplus store in your area....they should have magnets like crazy there....and of all different sizes. I bought a bunch at my local surplus store and they were cheap.
All you would need to do is find a nice strong magnet and then stick it to your weight (or collar) and then stick certain links of chain to add weight.... (one link...then two links...then three...etc)
good luck

I have the 1.25 pound PlateMates. I purchased four of them several years ago when I was going through shoulder rehab. I thing they are great. They are very easy to use. You just attach them to the end of your dumbbells and you are ready to go. They work great with hex style dumbbells or PowerBlocks. They will attach to anything metal that is flat. You can also get PlateMates that have holes in the center which are designed to be used with standard plates or Olympic plates.
When I purchased mine I got them direct from PlateMates. I received two bad PlateMates in my order. The magnets on the bottom were not flat and did not set well on anything flat. I called the people at PlateMates and they replaced the bad ones ASAP and paid for the return shipping. Their customer service was great. I don't think you can order from them direct anymore so cannot say how things are done now. Here's what is happening in my neck of the woods....

i'm not sure that an army surplus place would have magnets...i go to a place called princess auto (in canada) they have a surplus section where i got a stack of 20 magnets about the size of a silver dollar (they were wrapped up like money also) for $10...and big (the size of a 5lb weight) speaker magnets are $5 each
I also got some nice rectangular magnets from home depot...it takes four of them to hold on a 2.5lb plate real tight.
I also picked up 1lb plates from my local fitness store.
good luck,
