Post What's Worse Cigar vs. Cigarette?

Got into a conversation with my roommate about which is worse, he smokes cigarette's and me being a cigar smoker myself, he insisted that cigar's were worse. Sure, I only smoke 2, maybe 3 cigars a month, pending the season. But a person who smokes cigarettes will often smoke more. I do not inhale my cigar smoke, I don't know anyone that does, therefore, the fact that they have no filter in a cigar is completely moot. Nicotine is a nature chemical in tobacco, so you get that either way, but when you inhale the cigarette smoke, you absorb it much more rapidly. The slight amount of natural nicotine in the tobacco doesn't really come into play all that much when you don't inhale. And because cigars are all natural tobacco, they don't have any of the added nicotine or carcinogens that the cigarettes have. In short, cigars really aren't all that bad for you, but curious what anyone else thought?

And don't post stupid things like smoking is bad and kills. I know that, but more concerned with health side effects and such.
"I read somewhere how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong, to measure yourself at least once... to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions, facing blind, deaf stone alone, with nothing to help you but your own hands and your own head. . . ."

they're the same pretty much, considering one good-sized cigar = bunch of cigarretes, and if you're smoking 3 a month, that's... idk im tired.

Completely incorrect a cigar, and cigarette are smoked much differently

Cigars are usually consumed much slower with more pause in between drags, and your not suppose to inhale cigar smoke because of the high alkalinity and the lack of nicotine.

Considering you inhale a cigarette, I'd say a cigar.. for your lungs maybe but not your throat.

Well, I'd actually say cigars are not as hazardous simply because people don't tear through them like Diet Cokes on the Palumbo Cut Diet. I mean, who smokes 2 packs of CIGARS a day?
Not saying which one is BETTER if you were to smoke the same 1:1, but I personally think you're less likely to get "hooked" on cigars. Maybe my logic is faulty.
Cigarettes taste gross, btw (have tried, disgusting aftertaste!! Saccharine has nothing on this stuff!)

    ?? I guess dying isn't a "health side effect"?

Anyway, both cigars and cigarettes cause cancer and other illness. There is MUCH more data on the specific risks of cigarettes because they are much more popular and thus have a much bigger impact on populations as a whole, but it doesn't mean the cigars are any less dangerous.

One would certainly expect that the burden of disease would be shifted a bit from the lungs to the oral cavity. In some ways, you kind of "secondhand" smoke a cigar in terms of how much gets in your lungs. Though I think I'd rather have lung cancer than oral or pharyngeal cancer.

Either way, smoking is bad and it kills.
No sir, I don't like it.

Common sense dictates cigarettes are worse.

Throat and mouth cancers also have better prognoses than lung cancer.

According to Wiki Cigars have the same health effects of Cigarettes... It is still tabacco and your body is still absorbing it. Common sense would say you ar at a far greater risk to Mouth cancer with Cigars, and that is one type of Cancer you DON'T want (look up how Sigmund Freud died). I would say don't smoke either, but hell if I had to choose it would be cigars. At least you're not getting as much tar and **** in your lungs.

The cancer may be, but I doubt it could be that much worse than emphysema/bronchitis.

edit: hmm.. then again, maybe it is. Don't smoke, kids.

Its going to be an unmeasurable loss. I'd be worrying more about breathing in automotive emissions than a few cigars a month.

Cigarettes are much worse, unless you're smoking like 5 cigars a day and inhaling lol.

Simple answer cigarettes tend to be worse.

It is a little more complex than just they're worse. First, obviously volume matters. A pack a week vs a cigar a day is a big difference and would amke the cigar much worse. A big cigar can be the same amount of tabacco as two or so packs of cigarettes. Just think about one puff on a big cigar and one puff on a cigarette. Big difference.

The other side of it that makes the cigarettes worse is absorption. As has been stated most people don't inhale cigars. So if you think about what the lungs do, they take oxygen out of the air for our bodies to use and get rid of CO2. Therefore they are fairly efficient at absorbing stuff from the air, including carcinogens in cigarettes. On the other hand one would have a very hard time breathing via just taking the air into their mouth. Therefore the effects of cigar smoking tend to be mitigated by the much slower absorption.

So without getting into the value if lung vs oral or esophageal cancers for the most part cigarettes would be worse.

Smoking is bad, yes Boston Boy but I'm in my 50th year of life, never smoked , been around very few smokers ( my parents never smoked) but while hateing cigaette smoke my opinion of cigar and pipe smoke was much more open.
I grew up in Melbourne Australia, allready a petty big and diverse city by the 1970s ( Jesus, it's over 4 million now) therfore cultural coditionings play a part.

My farther, Russian born is still in good shape at 74 years old and play Badmignton ( If he was trying I won't eve see where his return went.)

I wouldnt mind followong his footsteps but I feel like relaxing with a pipe or cigar however I do not want restitrotory problems of which I've had warning signs) and
( I'm being 100% genuine with you) I'm a singer who can sing sirously high, any Micheal Jackson or Kate bush song, I can do note for note, any pop song is easy.

But ****, I feel like a strong cigar right now.despite never having one)

WILL I KILL MY HEALTH, MY SINGING, MY MONEY ???

Anyway despite Melbourne being cold by Australian standards I've never seen a single snowflake here. I reckon A Boston winter would take some ajusting.

    CHEERS! to all from Melbourne
