Why do my calfs hurt when I run?

Ok I am 5'9'' 175. I have been lifting awhile now. I am on another cutting cycle. Just got done from my bulking cycle. I am running 3.2 miles everyday. But my breath and length I can run at once is good. But my calfs start hurting so so bad. WHy is that? What can I do to stop it? It is holding me back from cutting down faster.

Its probably an indication they are weak, unless youre running on your toes all the time.

They shouldn't really hurt too much from distance running. Make sure you're stretching them really good after your runs.

Are they actually cramping up while you run? if so, you may be dehydrated or lacking pottasium.

    Calves or Achilles tendon?

it could be a combination of several things, you said you are just done "bulking" which means you gained weight, more weight for your calves to deal with over 3 miles is going to effect them. but it could be shoes, or that you are running on your toes... Im guessing alittle of all three. It took me about 4 months when I first joined the military, to learn how to run long distances without killing my calves. All those years of football and being a sprinter, created habits that were hard to break.

my calves hurt when I run and I run all the time.

You wil get used to it. Dont stress on it too much.

Anymore when I get sore calves it a sign that I was not relaxed when i run and I was trying too hard to go fast.

Slow down a bit, the speed will come to you. Also running every day is tough.

sTry a week where you split your runs up, slow down a bit and stand up straight and relax.

Relaxation starts in your face and goes to your shoulders. Do your traps or upper back hurt sometimes when you run? If so then you need to just eas e into it a bit more.

    Best of luck.

Try dynamically stretchiong your calf and shin muscles before your run. Walk w/ feet out, toes in, on your toes and on your heals for about 20 yards or so.

    Stretch calfs afterwards

The other problem, as other have sid may be your shoes. If you ahve had them for a long period of time, or have put over a couple hundred miles on them, the cushioning is more than likely shot which will lead to lower leg pain and shin splints often. I used a pair of shoes too long and eventually it began to fel like someone was prying off my calf with a crowbar.

try switching to bike or eliptical for a week or so, and get a new pair of shoes if needed...(running stores will help you find the right fit for your foot/ stride, etc much better than any footlocker athletes foot, etc.)

It could be compartment syndrome which requieres surgery,

This is where the muscle sheeth that holds the muscle is too small for the fibres and causes pain when you use the muscle under strenuos conditions

Find a step with your heel dangling over the edge and lean back to stretch your calves. Do this everyday.

I had it, and trust me, you're not able to run 3.2 miles, not even once a week.
Pre-surgery, even going up a flight of stairs was hurting my calves like crazy..

(at least that's how bad it was for me)

    I have this same thing.

My calves have always hurt when I run after about a Mile they start to hurt and then stop hurting around 2-2.3 miles in.

I have no idea why this happens on me, could be a lack of slow twitch muscle groups since my calves are huge.

I guess just deal with it , thats what I do. Stretching has been of little help with this issue but I find running and lifting your quads helps ease some of the pain.

I get pain in my Achille's tendons when I run uphill now, because I'm on my toes. I attribute this to weight gain (around 30 lbs), even though I don't weigh that much I do have a really, really slight build. It pisses me off. I rarely do calf raises so that might be the reason why I get this.

Sorry took me so long to answer. I was not at home. It is hurting at the bottom of my calves and a little lower than them.. Could be shoes. They are kind of big.. I might need smaller size. I do need to stretch before I run. Because I just go at it.

That is your achilles. Strentch, get some good running shoes, and stop running on your toes.
