O/T: Ever heard of these? (injury)

I have one girl on my team who's 14, 5'11". She's on IR because she broke the growth plate in her hip. She kept practicing for 3 weeks in pain without telling anyone because she couldn't tell exactly what was hurting. WTF? how do break a growth plate?

I have another 14 yo who recently had surgery for a tethered spinal cord along with a syrinx in her spinal cord. A tethered spinal cord is a condition is which the spinal cord is attached to an immovable structure. Normally, the bottom of the spinal cord floats freely within a pool of spinal fluid. When the cord is anchored to an immovable object, it stretches with growth and movement. Over time, neurological function will deteriorate. Also, this attachment can block the flow of fluids around the cord. This fluid pressure can cause cerebrospinal fluid to enter the spinal cord forming a cavity of fluid called a syrinx. The syrinx can expand and elongate over time damaging nerve fibers within the spinal cord. This can have multiple effects: muscle weakness and motor impairment in her legs, loss of bowel and bladder control, and scoliosis (which of course she has).
She had surgery and 10 days later was back in practice full force.

I'd never heard of these things before. Also, if I twist my ankle I whine about it for at least a week......these kids never even whimpered.

ankle sprains are more serious than one might suspect.. anything related to lig's and tendons can be very severe, and take so long to heal, lack of blood flow, strenuous injuries in most cases, hold it all together...etc

as for spinal issues .. yikes. My friend had a spinal tap, she did college cross country and was back to practice shortly after. Sounds similar to ur girls

i think its mostly genetics, some people can sustain what seems like a serious injury and bounce right back while others with the same injury may never fully recover

proper diet and rehabilitation goes a long way to speeding recovery as well

what are these girls practicing for?
