I believe I read somewhere that cops cannot search locked items in your car such as a safe or locked dash board without a warrant. Is this true? I live in wisconsin if that makes any difference. Thanks and of course reps.

Can cops search things in your car that are locked?

They can't search a locked car unless there is a contraband item in their "plain sight view" rule.
Then they can search your car or something like that.REP BACK PEOPLE with 6K+, and a link, brah.

I love the COPs episode where they ask the guy if they can search the car. Then tell him if he says no they will bring in the dog and if the dog tags on the car they can then search it anyway. So he tells them okay, and they search the car and find marijuana. When he was later asked why he allowed the search, he said because he didn't want them to think he was hiding something.

Cops aren't looking for hidden Easter egg in your car, they're looking for something to arrest you for. For chrissake, don't volunteer to help them do that.Last edited by KRANE; 08-19-2008 at 07:57 PM.

thanks for the replies but i still am a little hazy on the subject. So if i had a little safe in my trunk and it is locked, and the cops say my car smells like bud and say they have probable cause to search my vehicle can they or cant they force me to open the safe. would they need a warrant to do that or not.

i remember this guy played some cops real hard, they came searching his house house. so the cameras where everywhere and ****, so it the cops ask if he can search the backyard, the guy says sure you can search the backyard but the backyard only, the cop searches the backyard and opens the guys tool shed, finds weed. the comes back and says we found weed in your tool shed, than the guy says, but i gave you permission to only search the backyard right? The cop says yes and it kinda cuts away from there.

God, are you dumb. I give your reply 10 Slateds.
Probable cause can NOT be based on somebody's refusal to allow a search -THUS THE NEED FOR PROBABLE CAUSE.
Jeez, I don't know how it is possible you aren't in the red with your lying, nonsense posts.
edit: by the way there is a new stupid scale that I created:
1 Slated being mildly stupid

yes it will. I took a criminal justice class where I researched case after case regarding stuff like this. I've actually never come across a case where it didn't stand up, from nervousness to "general sweating," to all sorts of obvious bs.
4th amendment means **** in this age. Politicians are labeled as soft on crime and anti police if they dare stand in favor of the Constitution and elect judges who are fans of it, as well.
If you have drugs in your car and the cop suspects it, game over no matter what you say, and what you have locked. You're fcked, short a technicality and a clever lawyer
