Heart Rate Monitors
I just got one because I do a lot of cardio and I heard that the calorie count on the machines are not accurate but that a heart rate monitor is accurate. Has anybody used one? How accurate do you think it is?? I am mostly curious on how many calories I burn on my work outs each day. (I'm trying to lose 5 pounds by the end of this month.)
Also, where do you go here, or somewhere else in internet land, to learn how to do "other" exercises for certain muscles. Say. . . bicep exercises. I mostly do DB curls and I use this one machine all the time but I'd like to learn something different. Same stuff gets boring. Thanks for any input

I'll see if I can find you a link.
as for the heart rate monitor..I don't know much about them.

I have a Polar F4 and I love it! I wear it during weight lifting to monitor my HR and keep it in my HR zone and I wear it for cardio, as well.
You have to take into account the calories you burn at rest, to determine how many additional calories you are burning while active and wearing the HR monitor.
For ex, my BMR is around 2100 calories per fitday.com and my HR monitor. So that means I burn roughly 87 calories an hour, when at rest. If my HR monitor says I burned 500 calories in an hour, I subract 87 to determine what my actual calorie burning from exercise was for that hour and then add that to my BMR to determine total calories burned for the day.
BMR=2100 (roughly 87 calories per hr)
Burned 500 calories per HR monitor in an hr
500-87 = 413 calories burned from exercise
2100 + 413 = 2513 total calories burned for the day
I hope that makes sense.
