I was just reading the previous sushi thread, and I am uneducated on the detrimental affects of sodium from soy sauce. I eat a healthier-than-average diet and try to stay in shape. I have no hypertension or other cardiac type issues. I understand that sodium is bad for someone preparing for a fitness competition, but what about the rest of us? Are there other detrimental affects other than water retention? True, after a sushi dinner, I can retain nearly 5 pounds of water....but it is gone in a day or so. So whats the big deal? Does it hamper metabolism or anything? Thanks and please forgive my ignorance on the issue....but I eat salt (and a lot of it) in nearly every meal. I am a salt addict!

- water retention.
Regular table salt is basically 100% sodium chloride. If you take too much, it will accumulate in your body, and eventually cause problems. It can further aggravate problems like hypertension and heart problems...
Pure, unadulterated salt is a different story altogether. Pure salt has over 80 trace elements. It also has natural, useable magnesium and potassium. Becuase of this, pure salt will not accumulate in the body, and can actually help to flush out extra sodium.
No, I am not going to provide a study "proving" this. It will probably be another 5 or 10 years before this particular piece of knowledge is mainstream. Take it for what it is worth.
