Cornerback competition (reps)
alright I am a junior this year competing for the starting spot on varsity. Right now there is roughly 6 people trying for the spot. 3 jr/3 sr, i have the ability to start it mainly depends on me. But I am wondering if you guys have any tips for the following.
a)40 yard dash
b)vertical jump
c)general defensive tips
I am hoping for a 4.7 in the forty and maybe a 28-30" vertical but I want this and any advice is welcome

a) Run Fast
b) Jump High
c) get interceptions and pass break ups
You really needed to ask about this a lot earlier so we could help you improve your 40 and vert through extra workouts. Good luck to you.

you should get the strength training shoes..
you need to get that vertical jump way higher, like 32's at least. make sure you show your coach that you are dedicated, and show up to sumer lifting, and everything, and get committed. Also if you are db, start watching college games, and learn from them. also if you guys play bump and run, when you are close on them, and you are playing deep, push him and then push off of him, and you will get a better start on him, turning to the outside, because if he goes to the inside the linebacker will get him, if you play deep, back pedal, and drop low, so you can react, and jump up , and get an interception.
Edit: also, right whenever that qb tucks that ball, or gives it to some one that is running it, jump the ball, and run to the outside, and make sure you dont let him get on the outside of you, or your coach will take you out, and put someone else there. if you let him get on the outside of you he is going to be gone.even if you dont get the tackle dont let him get on the outside of you.
Edit #2. i just watched these videos and they are very informative.

For vertical I would superset Squats (medium weight) and box jumps. Save the explosiveness for the box jumps and go slow, controlled and low for the squats--you'll recruit more muscle fibers.
40yd dash is simply working on your sprint work. Do plenty of calve exercises and hit 20yd, 40yd and 60 yd dashes.
Read some of the articles on this site, they have a lot of good info on corner back work. I say always try to keep your hand on the receiver so you don't lose him. Be careful not to get called for interference. Peek in the backfield for the run on the start of the play then put your eyes directly on the receiver. Do not look for the ball unless you see him looking for the ball.
Good luck

my vertical was rounded down, haha. I'm 5'11-6' right now and on good days can dunk full sized hoop so I got decent hops don't worry. :P but i didn't want to sound like im exaggerating. As for my 40 it was just that I slacked early summer. I want to cut it down to a 4.5 during the season but just have a strong time this time.

How long till you get tested? Look for videos and drills that emphasize starting the 40 yard dash, that's going to be the best way to shave off whatever you can in the little time you have left.

run all the way through the finish line and don't think about letting up until you're at the 45-50.
for the vertical, to start, look at the notch you want to get before the jump. as you descend, put your head down. bring your head up as you explode out of your jump. i don't know what it is, but if my head is up the whole time looking at the target, my neck limits the flexibility and explosion of my neck and upper body. don't wait too long to jump after you've walked up to the bar, or you'll 'put your muscles to sleep'.
**** it, here's how you cheat and get away with it.
for a hand-timed 40, our trainer did the slightest, almost unnoticeable arm movement right before he hit the timer for the start. i picked up on it and was able to time it with my start.
for the standing vert, i used to cheat it by doing a little half inch jump right before my descent to fire-up the twitch fibers. the trainer isn't looking at your feet, he's looking at how many bars you can swipe.
coner is def. a fun position for trash talk. playing receiver is one of the most nerving positions, so remind the guy how hard your safety hits and what it means to drop a ball in front of a few thousand people.

I know everyone talks about how bad it is but if I could go back to high school. I would have tried to get my hands on some type of steroid now there are so many pro hormones it makes it alot easier. But the difference a couple of cycles would have made would have huge.
